Spending an hour or more on several crowded buses full of, let's face it, stinky people, after getting up before 7 am, to go teach some brats who don't give a rat's ass about you or English, for the equivalent of maybe 1000 bucks per month, yeah, sounds great, man.

You can do better, and you will.

Good luck and godspeed.

Having actually met the OP back in another galaxy far far away I wasn't going to comment much as I'm torn between hitting him with a baseball bat and slapping him around on the hood of a yellow car. I will say that he knows it isn't the end of the world and knowing PP he'll be back on his feet in know time. Yeah it sucks to get the arse can for something like that, but you do know that with a cup of crap comes a bucket of opportunity.

Scoot around the country some.. find someplace new that you like.

You'll be alright.. find a better place that has housing close to where you work.

Am I being a "jerk" for saying it is wrong if you are late for work or do not even show up for work?

Try it back at home sometime. Get a job and just don't show up or come late all the time.

no. if people cant make it to work on time they deserve what's coming.

promotion is usually the path of least resistance in getting rid of someone when their performance is substandard (esp. if a union is involved). we had to do it on a few occasions back home at my last job Very Happy

Dunno, they emailed me recently asking if I wanted my job back, I said no. Life in china is too easy to give up for a 70 hour a week job that is nothing but stress and migraines.

Was the OP so far from the school because they lodged him/her there, or was this a matter of choice? If you choose to live way far away and you're late to work, then it is your fault, no matter how junky the buses might be.

The manner of termination is odd, but with one of those SAFEA contracts, isn't there a provision for notice and some sort of arbitration. Failing which theoretically you have a grievance and could seek redress (the famous penalty clause, $500 to $2000 in damages)...

They probably realized they had just fired their cash cow. It's probably quite a hassle for them to trick another foreigner into taking that job.
