What kind of advice are you looking for specifically? Opening a bank account? How to get a visa and what type of visa to get? Where's the most money? Where to live?
Give me some specifics and I think I can help.

| My first advice is to spend 3 hours on this website with notebook and pencil ready and go through all the message threads for the past few months. Jot down what you think is important for you to know before coming to Mexico. Then take it from there. |

I never had any problems with that and I was eating street food from day one. |

Better to stay in a cheap hotel instead of a hostel.
Don't rent a place till you have a job.
Grab a decent city map and a free metro map your first day here.
It takes a while to learn the transport system. Same for learning the city. When asking for directions (to an interview example) be sure to ask what the nearest Metro (subway) station is.
Buy a metro pre-paid fare card and put a little money on it. Lines for Metro tickets can be very long during rush hour at busy stations.
Don't dress like a tourist.
Buy a cheap pre-paid cellphone. Most people have Telcel.
Also buy a prepaid Ladatel/Telmex calling card for $100 pesos to use in payphones.
Bring a laptop with you. Buying one here is more expensive.
Don't trust the cops. Same for taxi drivers.
Bring some nice clothes with you. Many schools have a dress code.
Sanborns has clean, free bathrooms (please leave a tip for the attendent)
060 is the emergency number in Mexico City (but don't trust the police)
Public hospitals provide free emergency care for tourists.
Street vendors and small shops will often overcharge foreigners. Bargain for the best price or better yet, just stick to reputable retail stores.
If you don't eat organ meat or certain meats (pork, beef) be careful, Mexicans eat just about anything.
And ALWAYS remember: Vehicles have the right of way at all times. And it doesn't matter what color the light is. Best to look both ways, even on one-way streets.

so, what do you want? a cookie? 
more advice: when eating street food, be sure to squeeze the fresh lime juice on the meat, and use the salsa. Both kill bacteria. |

By the way, those "limes" are lemons (green Mexican variety). Why don't Americans ever get that? Just to confuse you more, "Limas" are yellow and look like "real" lemons.  |

I can sympathize with Wildchild. I vacationed all over Mexico. Oaxaca, Chiapas, Jalisco etc and ate whatever was put in front of me. Although, when I first moved down here, my friends invited me to a 'very nice' Italian restaurant for my birthday. I spent the next week in the bathroom. And for months, never felt ''right''. I finally found a doctor that gave me more meds than Michael Jackson and got rid of whatever was living in my stomach. Lost 20 lbs during the whole ordeal.
My advice to the original poster. It doesn't matter where you eat. If things aren't clean. You'll get sick. Hygiene isn't a major concern here. You can't control it. Now matter where you chose to eat. |

Wow- a full stop every five words!
I'm tempted to think that is a typical internet ultra-negative post. Surely it's not expected for most visitors to spend months feeling ill when they come to Mexico because of the food? You just put your point rather dramatically, I feel. |

I tend to agree with you. It depends on the person, of course. As in many places (not just Mexico!) not all restaurants score top marks for hygiene, but if you are the kind of person who has been fussy (read: obsessive!) all your life about hygiene, then you have probably destroyed your immune system. If not, then an occasional bout of Moctezuma's Revenge is about all you have to worry about! |
