Hi, my friend and I just arrived in HCMC and we were wondering if their we're any spots where foreigners usually go to eat, drink and socialize. I do not plan on isolating myself for my remainder of my stay here but it would be nice to meet people that are in a similar situation and that could give us some advice on the ins and outs of HCMC. Also can any recommend a good place to stay? We're currently staying at families guest house but I would prefer something more private or more like a hotel. Thanks any info would be greatly appreciated!

The first (and sometimes final) resting place for most foreigners is the unholy trinity of Pham Ngu Lao, Bui Vien and De Tham streets in D1. Go there on any given day and every second face you see will be Western. There are loads of hotels and drinking holes frequented by the people you seek. If you want teachers specifically you should try T&R Tavern, Le Pub, and Bread and Butter (practically ILA headquarters on Sunday nights).

The other area to try would be the streets surrounding Dong Khoi and south Hai Ba Trung, also Q1. It's more expensive than the Pham so you get a better class of drunk, but there are loads of nice bars/restaurants around there, and some reasonably priced little hotels among the five-star behemoths.

When you're in the Pham Ngu Lao area keep an eye out for the free Asia Life or The Word magazines. They are both magazines geared to ex-pats living in HCMC. Good luck!
