I'm planning to stay in Indonesia for all of March & April of next year - primarily to study Indonesian. However, it would be great if I could pick up some work there (f/t or p/t) to cover some of my expenses.

Is it possible to get short term gigs to make a bit of scratch in the major cities?

I've got a TEFL cert, bachelor's, master's (in an unrelated subject), and close to three year's of teaching experience (Korea, China, Australia).

What are my chances?

Sure, it's possible. I doubt the 3 month contract though. Get in touch with the language schools before arriving. Let them you know you'll be available for part time work. Then contact them again when you're here. Probably best not to mention the relatively short amount of time you'll be in town though. Many schools will pay cash in hand to part timers filling in the empty slots due to illness etc. Depending on where you're living, advertising for privates is also a possibility.

You need to research your visa requirements too. As far as I know 60 days is the most for a social visa (tourist visa) before having to leave the country. You need to apply for that before arriving into the country.

but it is illegal to work on tourist, social, and business visas. the only way to work legally in indonesia is on the 1 year KITAS. they cost the school a lot of money and they wouldnt be interested in sponsoring u for 2/3 months. any school that is willing to hire u is dodgy and not concerned about your welfare should immigration pick u up. also, u cannot open a bank account with a KITAS.

social visa is different from tourist visa. tourist visa is a visa on demand for 30 days for a fee of 25 dollars. no sponsorship needed. as newgabe said, u need sponsorship for the social visa. if u are studying music at a school, they should be able to provide the sponsorship. if u are just hangin out and jamming, u will need to find a person or organization to do this for u. one place is okusi.net. they are a little more expensive than other places, but most people that i know that have used them have been happy and no hidden costs.

With a legitimate school, you could offer to foot the bill for the legal work visa and work permit. Perhaps they wouldn't mind sponsoring you as long as you paid the visa fees? For a mere 3 months you would probably have to pay out around Rp10 million once you counted in the agent's fee and foreign worker tax, etc. Your salary would have to be pretty amazing to make that a reasonable option.

It sounds like you are screwed.

well, thanks for letting me know at least. maybe i'll have to give up on going home for awhile, and hunt down a solid one-year gig instead.

actually the foreigner tax is 100 dollars per month payable in advance for a total of 1200 us dollars. then there are the fees for the 7 government agencies for the work permit, flight to singapore, agents in indo and singapore, npwp, national police registration, and on and on. alot more than 10 million.

lots of schools do hire people part time without work permits or work permits for other schools. so it is doable as long as u dont call attention to yourself. personally i dont recommend it as it will be very expensive if u get caught. if u are only staying here 2 months, u might not need to work as the cost of living is pretty low, especailly if u live outside of jkt.

It is perhaps a little-known fact that one does not have to pay the entire 12 months of foreign worker tax ($1200) in advance for a 3-month work permit. In that case you only have to pay tax for 3 months. Some agents will process all the stages you mentioned for around 6-7 million. Finally, if you process this visa in your home country before you arrive, there's no need to go to Singapore. That's how I estimated 10 million, but it is merely a hypothesis.

Matt_22, you will LOVE Indonesia so much and end up staying for a whole year anyway.

there is no such thing as a 3 month work visa.
