Dear Deicide,

"I mean unlike a hetero man you will have tons and tons of eye candy and opportunities..."

And among those will be the opportunity to be jailed and/or deported. Plus it's not true that "straight" men have "ZRO" opportunities, even in the Kingdom. A fair amount of dating goes on - again, though, very discretely in Saudi since being in public with an unescorted woman not your wife is a "no-no" there.

Regards,
John

Dear Deicide,

Not only English - I actually dated an American nurse there back in the 80s, and there are a good number of nurses from the Philippines, especially.

John

If you're in Muscat, it's fairly easy to blend into the expat crowd--bars, dating, etc.--even with an alternative lifestyle. Foreigners can pretty much live as they would back home, as long as they don't flaunt their... how to phrase it? ... freedoms/ foreignness/ "sinful" lifestyle. If you're in small-town Oman, you've got to be a bit more careful, but still, it's not like the expats spend their evenings sitting at home knitting. Wink

Dear Deicide,

Not wise to generalize, though. Think of all those nurses who may be saying,

"Teachers . . . bad experiences with them."

Actually, that nurse I dated - we ended up living together (outside of Saudi, of course) for about six years. Never married - only because SHE didn't want to.) And parted best of friends (we still correspond.) Stranger yet - she actually worked as an Elderhostel group leader for my wife here in Santa Fe. The two of them got along famously - discussing my short-comings, no doubt.

John

Who is that African leader, Deicide? He's certainly not one of the greats I know; Nyerere, Lumumba et al.

Are you kidding me? He was the greatest African dictator and kleptocrat in modern history, with 30+ years of autocratic, tyrannical rule...he was truly one of the greats!

Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire!

Well I guess there are two sides to every coin. Although I'm not exactly concerned with the availability of eye candy. Also, I did not mean to hijack this thread and turn it into the alternative lifestyle in Oman thread. Arrow

I don't mind the lack of alcohol since I don't drink here in the US anyway. Since I have an alternative lifestyle (i.e. gay) I'm skeptical about going to KSA. I'll have a look at the info on that part of the forum though.

Deportation would be the best scenario if you were discovered.

Worst case is that they would kill you.

Who mentioned knitting? Actually I do stay at home with my needles and poodle wool. Anyone in need of a scarf out there in the Gulf?

From what I've heard KSA's a great place to be gay. Pakistan's another good one too.

Dear Global Hobo,

Not if you get caught. But then, I suspect you were being ironic.

"Saudi Arabia: 7,000 lashes for being gay"

http://www.gbmnews.com/articles/1626/1/Saudi-Arabia-7000-lashes-for-being-gay/Page1.html

"Although this article portrays Saudi Arabia as being some-what tolerant towards sexual minorities, the government still officially endorses the death penalty as a punishment for male-to-male sex. Additionally, the government of Saudi Arabia is very intolerant towards gender minorities including transgender-identified and transvestite immigrant domestic workers. Many sexual and gender minorities have fled Saudi Arabia and sought asylum in other countries due to family pressures, societal ostracizing, and political dissenting."
