Dear Mr Decide,

I say, "no that is not the end of it, not by a longshot".

I have also studied what you claim to have studied and I know where you're coming from. But with all due respect how can you seek truth if you are so baised to begin with? As one great man said, "you can't handle the truth". Do you really want to know the truth?

A grain of sand is greater than all your words, thoughts, studies and accomplishments. This is the truth. You will be long gone but that grain will still be there.

{I'm taking point here TLOH and giving you covering fire. Now run to cover before the verbal barrage begins}

The truth is that we are specks of dust on a mudball in a tiny galaxy in a universe so old and vast that we cannot even grasp its age in real terms. BUT of course the creator the universe waited 13.7 billion years to reveal himself to ignorant goat herders in a remote part of the desert in an even remoter part of the world....come on? You buy that?

How old are you 25 going on 13?

What has that got to do with anything? Do you really believe everything you see, feel, touch, smell, and hear?

That is the eonic question. Mankind has always looked up into the heavens and awed at it. Don't duck out with a scientific recourse. Telling me the the age of the universe. So what?

That speck of dust can throw a whole planet off its orbit, maybe even contribute to a supernova, who knows? Our minds are not built to comprehend this vastness of infinity and beyond. Don't get me wrong Dr. Hawkins is a great thinker and I respect his points of view just like I respect spiritual points of view.

Please....

Regards.

I assume you are an adherent of the popular Dying and Rising God Cult plagiarised from other such cults in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, we call Christianity?

What is your moral code?
How do you know what is good and what is wrong?
Do you think moral values change with time or are static?

Well, it seems you believe in the Ethical Atheists 10 Commandments:
1. Thou SHALT NOT believe all thou art told.
2. Thou SHALT seek knowledge and truth constantly.
3. Thou SHALT educate thy fellow man in the Laws of Science.
4. Thou SHALT NOT forget the atrocities committed in the name of god.
5. Thou SHALT leave valuable contributions for future generations.
6. Thou SHALT live in peace with thy fellow man.
7. Thou SHALT live this one life thou hast to its fullest.
8. Thou SHALT follow a Personal Code of Ethics.
9. Thou SHALT maintain a strict separation between Church and State.
10. Thou SHALT support those who follow these commandments.

Dear Deicide,

The truth is - we can never know the truth, at least regarding what you're writing about.

The truth is - people people believe whatever it is that they think will make them feel happy/happier - and that includes even your beliefs.

The operative word is whatever they THINK will make them happy/happier.

Some people actually do find "happiness" in despair, hard though that must be for most of us to fathom.

Regards,
John

No. I sincerely wish there were more to it all than what is here....that would make me infinitely happier, just as an earlier belief in astrology did but confronted by too much evidence, I could not continue on with it.

Dear Deicide,

And I often wish I had the "comfort" of a faith that promised me eternal life.

But I don't - so, like Rabelais, on my deathbed, I'll think this: I am off in search of a great perhaps.

Regards,
John

Why are you interested in moving to the Middle East then, young lass of still younger blood?

With such open denigration of Islam, I am shocked that this thread is still not locked, or at least that the offensive posts have been removed. I believe in freedom of speech, but this board is not for that purpose, and anyway, this board is for a certain purpose, and discussing religion, even politely, is not one of them.

I intend to respond fully to you, Amy, in a few hours from now. If this thread has been locked by then, I will make a new thread to respond to your points.

Well, before it gets locked, let me quote Einstein:

"The bigotry of the nonbeliever is for me nearly as funny as the bigotry of the believer."

http://atheism.about.com/od/einsteingodreligion/tp/Was-Einstein-an-Atheist-.htm

And, loathe though I am to dispute Al, I would use the word "offensive" rather than "funny."

John

"Life is at the start a chaos in which one is lost. The individual suspects this, but he is frightened at finding himself face to face with this terrible reality, and tries to cover it up with a curtain of fantasy, where everything is clear. It does not worry him that his ideas are not true, he uses them as trenches for the defense of his existence, as scarecrows to frighten away reality."

Dear Deicide,

You can non-believe in as many - or as few - gods as you want.

Others can believe in as many - or as few - as they want.

No one here is pushing their beliefs upon you.

Why not return the favor?

Militant atheism is as repugnant to me as militant __________ (fill in the blank with any religion.)

Let's hear from Al once more:

"I have repeatedly said that in my opinion the idea of a personal God is a childlike one. You may call me an agnostic, but I do not share the crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth. I prefer an attitude of humility corresponding to the weakness of our intellectual understanding of nature and of our own being."

John
