|
|
Hi,
I apologize for making a new thread, especially one with such a silly title, but I couldn't find a thread to ask this in.
I am currently considering taking the CELTA course in April of next year, and I'm currently debating whether I want to go to Hanoi or HCMC first (I'd like to try both).
My question is: would I be able to teach children with the CELTA? Meaning, will schools see it as a valid certification for the job? I don't mind teaching adults, but I think I'd like to teach children better (at least to start out with).
Thanks in advance,
Pedro |

Yes, although the CELTYL extension will give you specific training targeted at 'Young Learners' funnily enough.
Most language colleges will follow a particular coursebook for adults and one for kids, you will essentially teach from that book in most places so there will be targeted activites contained within each coursebook for the relevent age group.
Good luck. |

Teaching kids here is a huge market and it is very easy to get hours doing it. However for the better jobs a CELTA is normally required. I've never heard of any mention of a CELTYL as a requirement but it might be an asset. I believe you would have to take that course down in HCMC.
Oh I'm in Hanoi btw. |

Thanks for your replies!
I read a little bit about the CELTYL, but it seems to me like I'd be better off getting the CELTA, right? I mean, with CELTA, I'd be able to teach adults and children alike, but with the YL one, I'd only be able to teach children.
Still undecided on Hanoi or HCMC though, ugh. :/
Thanks again |

I don't know of any employers that require the YL extension, but as with the CELTA it will give you valuable skills to teach children specifically. It's only 2 weeks. |

You have to have a CELTA first in order to do the 2-week YL extension. The actual 4-week CELTYL, which you can do in place of the CELTA (and you are correct in stating that the CELTYL would not be seen as a qualification for teaching adults) is being discontinued after 2010. The YL extension will continue to be offered. You're much better off with the CELTA or an equivalent ESL course with an adult learner focus, a decent school will provide you with additional training and opportunities for observations before asking you to teach YL. And the CELTA in general can apply to teaching teenager classes in many respects. Many 'adult' classes start at age 16. |
