This is the last time we discussed VETI: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=76363&sid=8a038e1972c2c3cb37c383f2cda69b04

This is what I was told by a VETI employee:

* EFL teachers earn between AED24,000 and AED32,000 per month (basic)
* accommodation is provided
* there's an AED20,000 furniture (relocation?) allowance
* medical insurance is provided (in accordance with UAE law)
* airfare is not included; employees have to pay for their airfare themselves
* kids' schooling is not paid for; parents have to pay for it themselves
* there are split shifts and for many it doesn't make sense to go home in between, so a workday can be up to 12 hours long
* some disgruntled, newly-arrived teachers are packing up already.

The money definitely sounds amazing, but probably only for a single person or a childless couple. And then there are the long hours and the apparent unhappiness...

More than this I don't know...hope this at least sheds some light!

Gosh...thanks. This sounds just up my alley...I am single and I've had worse jobs than this one, I'll bet.
Funny about the airfare, though. Otherwise ecactly what I'm looking for.
Thanks again..

At the risk of giving my ignorance away what can people tell me about ADEC and PPP? What sort of places are they to work for?

I think they're connected if not the "same thing". If you do a quick search on ADEC - there's been quite a bit about them in the past 3 - 6 months. Nothing stellar (but what teaching gig is really) but nothing "scraping the bottom of the barrel of existence" either.

One recent poster complained about how HCT ZU UAEU AUS etc are often cited as being the preferred employers - that comes from people who have worked in the region for many years - however, some of the "new" guys may turn out to be good employers, but they have no track record.

No track record = no history and nothing to rely on in terms of reliability of salary payment, benefits, etc. It's not that they're "bad" but that they're new and in this part of the world, you have no legal recourse (and often have to leave the country before any action can be instituted) against them. Unfortunately, there's a long history of fly by night and dodgy places here in the GCC that makes us want to step back and think long and hard about who and where to apply to and what to accept.

You pick your risks Shocked , you take your chances. If you're young (and feeling lucky Very Happy ) you might be willing to take a flyer on one of them. Who knows? Maybe you'll be back in 3 to 5 years saying Nyah Nyah Nyah Nyah Nyah

Just wondering...has anyone actually applied to this place and heard back from them...I realize one might be interested in keeping everything"hush hush". But if someone could verify that this place really exists, I'd be most obliged.
By the way...is expecting $5000 a month plus housing etc. unrealistic these days in Dubai? The only gigs I see paying that much are military positions in the dreaded Kingdom next door.

Thanks; Derve

If you have the quals and experience USD5000 is not unheard of. But you need both 99% of the time and you will work for it. That said, some places are "easier" than others, but usually you don't find out which suit you best until you get here and get some lay of the land - and it can be a very personal expectation and perception.
