my friend over stayed and he was lucky to stay in the country (they let him off) but they were very angry
but this was over 10 years ago and he had a Japanese wife, I imagine things are much stricter now |

All good, explained to the lady my situation, I was very busy recently and whatnot. She was a cool girl, no problem and processed me without any hitches.
I am self sponsoring as I have multiple part time jobs, not full time. They do not sponsor part time jobs ( the companies ), most anyways from what I have heard. |

Great news! Was wondering how it went between classes today.
Is there any good information online on the paperwork required to self-sponsor? |
You might do a search. Self-sponsorship just means you keep the same visa you had, but you don't use an employer to sponsor it. So, you have to show the same guarantees of income as before but presumably from more than one employer. If the total income is ok with immigration, you should be able to self-sponsor.

Is there any good information online on the paperwork required to self-sponsor? Am good for a while yet but I'm hoping to self-sponsor next time around, so it'd be good to start having a look sooner rather than later. And it sounds like you got yours right!

You need in addition to your passport and identity card:
1. Job contracts at the time of application.
2. Tax receipts for last year. I had trouble finding out exactly what receipts were needed, city or income, I was told by 4 - 5 different people it was city, then it was income. So I prepared all.
You can get these at you local ward office ( income ) 600 yen, city tax also 600 yen if I remember correctly. If you were in a different place before Jan 1st 2009, you must get them from your city of residence last year.
3. Pay slips for the job/ jobs at the time of your application, also bring last years pay slips to be safe.
4. Patience |

Don't extend your visa and you'll most likely be arrested, deported and not let back in for several years. Never, ever do it.
Happened to a friend of mine, he left the country a week after his visa had expired and was arrested trying to leave the country. He just assumed that it wouldn't be a problem. It is. A big one. |

| Apparently if your visa has expired, going to the airport is totally the wrong thing to do. If someone whose visa has expired goes to Immigration and basically throws themselves on the mercy of the immigration officers there, they will be treated much more leniently. |

| So how exactly does someone forget when their visa expires? Isn't that like forgetting your birthday? I've been thinking about my visa renewal for the past 6 months (it expires in march) |

People forget to renew their driver's license much in the same way. If you don't do it often, it's easy to neglect/forget.
It happens. |
