I heard through a reliable source that schools will soon no longer be allowed to recruit from overseas and provide teacher visas (or new legislation will make it much harder )? I heard that the mcschools in particular are going to be up a creek. This will sound harsh, but I'd love to see the mcschools go under as they are little much from a step up ( or not ) from indentured servitude. I'm on a regular work visa so it doesn't affect ppl at my work, but we had a former BKC er come in recently looking for work over this issue. Anyone else hear this? I know the work visa quota was cut for 2010. |

I think it is related to that post. I think the McSchools are rather demonised. You can get paid more in small schools, but then the small schools can only afford to take on experienced people who can hit the ground running. The McSchools offer more development and support and are therefore useful for new teachers and those new to Russia; and that has an impact on what is paid. A) More money goes on support. B) Newbies are less skilled - they don't always know this of course - and therefore should expect a rather different deal. Criticising them is a bit like complaining about being an ill-paid apprentice. Tis life. Why you would want to take out major employers is rather beyond me. |

As this thread is now off-topic, I've posted a new response in the thread titled "New law for all language schools in Russia..what's going on?" |

Without being snide coledavis, I'd like to ask how long you've been here in Russia; it would never even occur to me to ask this question in this country |

I provided reasons for my comment, relating to helping newcomers. I'm not a newcomer, and am currently working for a non-mainstream school (no support etc). If you provided rationale for your query rather than just saying that it's a silly question, I would be able to engage with it. As it is, it looks as if you're using seniority as a basis for argument. I'm not going that way. Please provide something more tangible than this 'it goes without saying' attitude. And merely saying that you're not acting in a particularly way (snide or racist or sexist or whatever) does not provide some sort of insurance against being criticised on such grounds. I conclude with a dictionary definition of snide (Cambridge University online):
snide adjective
/snaɪd/ adj
(especially of remarks) containing unpleasant criticism that is not clearly stated
I can't be sure about 'unpleasant' but then your lack of clear statement makes it hard to tell.. |

My comment is what it is. However, I'd like to make three things clear: 1) I never said your question was silly; 2) I have helped to start a school here from the ground up, and know very, very well how difficult legislation usually is on businesses; and 3) I was well-aware of the meaning of snide, though you snidely implied I wasn't
Good luck. |

To say that a question wouldn't be asked by somebody with experience is in effect to rubbish it.
If you knew that snide meant making an unclear criticism, then why did you do it and why do you still think that your comment wasn't snide?
Also, as my criticism of you was not at all unclear - I spelt it out - then your suggestion that I implied anything, snidely or otherwise, is unfair, to say the least. |

Gentlemen, gentlemen, please. This isn't going anywhere. Perhaps the PM function is a better option? |
