I will be arriving in Tokyo in April, and I am planning to look for a job at an eikaiwa. I have a BA, CELTA, and six months teaching experience in Sao Paulo, teaching one to one to business executives. I'm 47, but look ten years younger, have tremendous energy and enthusiasm, and am determined to ind a job. Also, my CELTA teachers, and my students in Brazil said I have a gift for teaching pronunciation.

My quesiton is: How tough is it going to be for me to find work in Tokyo? I know it's not a black and white situation, and I've read many of the posts on this subject, but I was hoping to receive some fresh up to date perspective.

Well, academic and fiscal years start on April 1st, so you might have better odds if you could come a few weeks sooner. Getting the visa alone will take 2-8 weeks.

To be honest... slim. Not impossible, but slim. Come in February or March and you'll have... slightly less than slim chances. Two years ago and before, you'd have had a good chance. Now, the market is shot.

Could help if you are a speaker of the variation of English that the school wants and/or they want someone who can teach.

Could also be the bullet in your foot, if you don't speak the "right" English and/or they don't want experienced teachers who are going to storm in and start trying to change things.

You'll also be aware (as Glenski has pointed out) that the academic year starts in March/April.
Just April.

Thanks everyone for your help with my question. It's not going to be easy, but I'm determined to make it work, so I plan to arrive in the spring and do my best to make a go of it.

you should consider applying as much as possible now and trying to secure some strong leads/ interviews. Then at least you have some more to go on when you arrive. It will be much tougher if you just plan to arrive in spring, and only give yourself a few weeks to secure a position from cold. Start contacting early, let the companies know you will be arriving in Tokyo for an interview and get the groundwork done now is my advice. Good luck.

Pedant.
But an important point to be pedantic about. Cool
