Alright so, i've finally graduated from college, have two BA's, and am heading for Asia. I thought i'd go to Thailand initially, but i'm having second thoughts. Basically, I want to teach in Thailand, Japan, and India before this is all over, i'm allocating ten years.
Problem: Finding a job over $1200 a month looks tough there. Answer: Japan first for the better pay. Problem: it sounds like starting out there is very expensive, and the job market is bad.
Compromise: Taiwan? Basically, I don't want to get stuck in Thailand forever because I can't make enough money there to then go somewhere else. Anyone with experience teaching all these places would be particularly good to hear from. |

You can easily compare these countries in financial terms (and the subsequent travel it affords you while on vacation) but in terms of lifestyle they are very different.

1) Taiwan (clear winner, by a long way)

Looking for the best ONE year away, all things considered (some of which I have not mentioned)
1) Taiwan

Looking for great food
I can�t rank them as they are so different. It�s all about personal taste.
Thailand wins hands down in your first few months. Sweet, sour, spicy, strong flavors�.. but it gets very repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, after a few months.
Japan is probably the most reliable food in the world in terms of preparation, hygiene and presentation. You�ll pay for it though. If you�re not into fresh or pure tastes you�ll struggle. Nice and safe but a bit restrictive and boring before long (especially on a normal budget)
Taiwan is the least renowned, but you�ll never run out of options, diversity of tastes and a forever growing number of personal favorites. Good Taiwan food is great, but bad Taiwan food is horrible. It remains to be the most durable and interesting for me.
THESE ARE MY PERSONAL OPINIONS AND I WON'T BE COMMENTING ON ANY REPLIES. I CURRENTLY LIVE IN TAIWAN BUT HAVE EXPERIENCE OF ALL 3 COUNTRIES. STILL, MY PREFERENCES MAY HAVE BECOME BIASED

The job market here is awful. I'm just getting by with 11 hours a week.
The country itself seems to be a utopia. Foreigner-friendly laws, great weather, the beach is nearby, low prices, a useful language to learn, etc.
Too bad that every guy with his MA TESOL or teaching degree realized this in 1982 and came over and took all the great jobs, leaving only detritous 550 NTD-an-hour jobs at buxibans where "it's your fault if the students throw rocks at you, because your lesson is boring..." |
