Hello

I am a teacher in Korea and I still have a good while before my second contract ends, but I want to see what the market is like in China. I am CELTA certified and I will have had over three years experience after this contract ends. To get to the point, what sort of salary could I expect? I would like to go to a place like Shenzen or Gungzhou preferabley teaching older students. Any info would help.

Thanks

It's a bit crowded in both these places right now - too many itinerant amateur travelator-*beep*-teachers have accumulated here, occupying posts and disappearing over night, leaving classes in a lurch and employers furious.
The going rate was pretty good until recently, but it has been going down for now one year.

What about other areas like Nanning or Shanghai? Just as long as its not too far North. How long should I take looking for a job before I am actually prepared to go?

What to expect?? Coming from Korea I would say less money and more free time...So far in 2004 I have been off work as much as on.All paid.

How much you will earn is an impossible question. At least 3000 Y but maybe a lot more. Depends on luck and whether or not you want to go in for overtime or moonlighting...Poorer areas pay less generally...Personally I wouldn't start looking until I was almost ready to come over...But if you want a specifc city maybe you could look earlier.

Where? is also tough to say...Have you been in China before? I like smaller cities---they are more "manageable" and you can always travel on time off. If you are willing to venture north a bit Nanjing and Qingdao--to name 2--are popular usually with Westerners.

there are tons of jobs in Guangdong province(Guangzhou). Sure there are smuck teachers here but the market is hardly flooded. I dont know anyone here that works 20 hours a week and makes less than 7000RMBs a month. I'm in a small city north of Guangzhou making great wages. Keep in mind...theres a lot of BS posted in these forums(guilty, guilty, guilty) Embarassed but I'm not BSing this time Wink

no matter where you end up, I think that you should expect your stress level to go down a few notches compared to what it is in Korea....that is provided you can enjoy a laid back (that's an understatement Confused ) athmosphere

Police interrogations are more laid back than Korea. Thanks for the info though.
