That's one for the folks who live in Japan just now - I don't know myself as I'm heading back to Japan next year, but I'll have a spouse visa.

If I want to renew my visa, though, can I count private lessons towards the 200,000 yen a month guideline that they apparently use for determining whether to extend to a freelance teaching visa? I heard somewhere that only jobs with established companies with whom you sign a contract are applicable to that 200,000 yen a month requirement...

That's what I heard, too. You need to show them contracts between you and the employer. That's why that route is usually only taken by people teaching part-time at several eikaiwa, high schools, universities etc.

There's no such thing as a "freelance teaching visa"
No one said there was.

Whatever. It was obvious that he meant the self-sponsored visa and was describing it as a 'freelance teaching'- because in that case you aren't working for a single full-time employer.

I meant "self-sponsored visa."

Semantics, semantics.

Honestly, unless the name in Japanese is "serufu suponsaado biza" in katakana, I think there could multiple translations.

I consider working for multiple schools on a voluntary basis to be "freelance," so I see nothing incorrect about referring to it as a "freelance teaching visa." Nobody is ever truly self-employed, aside from subsistence farmers and hunter-gatherers...
