Any sound advice or feedback on the advantages and disadvantages of being hired direct by the school/university than hired by a recruiter?

cheers

paying (not an inconsiderable amount) so as to create conditions where your recruiter and workplace can, if they like, play pass the buck leaving you frustrated v's not

it's easier and you'll get to keep all your pay that you've earned, if you simply apply yourself

I'm being hired direct by two potential employers (narrowed down from 5) however, I read horrible stories from this forum about unpleasant working situations. I thought that perhaps if you have an English speaking recruiter /organization, you can get protection from shady employers.

However if you have an employer who did not abide to the contract, where do you go to file complaints?

this forum sounds like reading a daily newspaper where all the news you get are typically scary, it's making me scared to go to China. I've been to 45 countries, taught in refugee camps and other language schools but these stories i read in this forum only give me the creeps about China.

Please, is there any positive feedback from anyone who's done the work. I understand there are unpleasant situations. but can our respective embassies do something about these unfair treatments from employers?

Thanks

Dear Renegade,

Thanks a lot for your last post.. now I feel a little bit better. The college I am going to is in Sichuan. The college looks decent from their website and I am dealing with the DOS directly.

My boyfriend who is on sabbatical is accompanying me to China just in case...
Where are you posted?

I found a recruiter to be helpful on the first trip to Asia/China. Getting out of Beijing Int'l Airport and getting a taxi to a hotel downtown and then getting from the hotel to the West Railway Station and then finding my stop was a bit more than I could handle on the first trip with zero Mandarin ability. The cost was worth it in reduced salary. After a few weeks or months in country things become more manageable and then you won't need a recruiter. Employers also like it when you are already IN country with a visa.

I am sure others will strongly disagree, but I found value in having a contact here that was motivated by money. They helped me get around.

Don't take the "horror-stories" too seriously. You only get one side of the story and you don't know who has written them.

Note that there are a lot of irresponsible people, general *beep*-ups or people with zero teaching experience who come to China to teach. They get hired, fail in what they do and get screwed by their employers. Say what you want about the morals of it, but as long as you do a decent job and is a somewhat solid person, your employer won't have any interest in ripping you off.
