I am thinking of taking a teaching job in Oman, but wondered if there would be a problem if I am Jewish? I am not a religious person, so I have no problems with it. What about Omanis? I put Baptist on my visa application, because I didn't know what else to do. HELP!!!!!!! |

If you stick to the story of being Baptist, there shouldn't be a problem. No one will ever ask you to prove it.

Yesterday on BBC they talked about the last Jews in Yemen being forced to leave. Five thousand years of history? There used to be Jews in Oman too until 1948. |

According to some of my students there still are some Jews in the Dhofar area, but it is not advertised if you know what I mean. If I were you I wouldn't go around flaunting you're Jewish because like most Arabs in the Middle East Omanis personnally do not acknowledge the Jewish state of Israel. They will correct you and say Palestine. |

As usual, we never found out if Joy, who posted this question in 2004, ever went to Oman or not.

Actually I had already told her that back in 2004 when she asked the question.

2004 and now 2009, at least we mutually agree the same advice stands. |

Unless you go around telling everyone you're Jewish or setting up a menorah in your office, I can't think why it would ever come up or be relevant. If you're white, people will assume you're Christian unless you tell them otherwise. And religion is one of those "better not discussed in the classroom" topics anyway, so I don't see it being an issue. |
