Don't worry. You can find cheap kosts. My brother just rented one for 1 month for 900,000Rp. It was in Jakarta in the Kuningan (spelling? It was about 15 minutes drive from Jl Jaksa, and about a 10 minute walk to the TBI in Kunninggan) area. It was 'shanty' though. Private western toilet; bed; fan; no AC. It reminded me of a cheap little guesthouse with no thrills.

If you're after a very free, sociable, eye opening and reasonably priced kost, No. 80 in Jl. Genteng Ijo, Kuningan fits the bill. Any ojek rider in the Jl. Karet Pedurenan area will know it.

I lived there for a year in the early days and still visit friends there. No questions are asked with visitors and it's filled with an eclectic, young bunch of residents. The Indonesian majority mostly fall into the category of either; high class prostitutes and mistresses, models, hostesses, DJ's and other nightlife related fields. There's also a small long term Nigerian contingent, focussed on counterfeiting scams and other shady activities. A small percentage of regular folk with 9-5 office jobs and the occassional short term westerner. Despite what it might seem, it's very safe and everyone is very friendly. If you're open minded and looking to socialise it's an interesting introduction as a newbie.

Room prices range from Rp2 - 4.5 million/month
