So I applied to JALSS and they got back to me and I'm trying to find out more about this company.

I'm under the impression that my future employer should be the one to help me apply for and sponsor my visa. Interestingly, they emailed me back about how they won't be able to help me and I'd have to talk to an agency or lawyer about this.

This seems like a red flag to me, does anyone have experience or wisdom they wish to impart regarding visas and/or JALSS?

Thanks!

I'm no expert, but I think you need someone to sponsor you for your visa....unless you self-sponsor, but you still need to submit documents from your employers (at least I needed to when I recently renewed my visa). Is this a part-time job?

Not all employers can or are willing to sponsor visas.

In your first year, you need a degree and an employer offering fulltime contracted employment to your sponsor you. If you don't have the degree or they are not offering fulltime employment, they can't get you a visa.

And some employers want people last minute, or don't want to be seen as responsible for the employee so want people with visas in hand.

So them telling you they can't help you with the visa shouldn't be seen as a red light, but reading some of their reviews should.

JALSS seems to be a dispatch company. If they won't sponsor you for a work visa, you can't work here. Self-sponsorship can't take place until you've worked here for a year first.

You might want to see these reviews of JALSS from employees. Not very stellar to say the least.

Employers don't have to sponsor a visa, and even if they do, they don't have to be the ones to file the application. If you are out of the country, it makes sense that they (and probably most who sponsor) will take care of that for you. Even if they do sponsor your visa, it's pretty despicable to tell an employee that he needs a lawyer to do the visa processing. You will not need one, of course, but you need to file papers that you and the employer provide.

I got a larger red flag from JALSS about two years ago. They urgently needed a teacher in boondocks Kantou, hired me over the phone and told me to move there ASAP to get ready to teach in a a few days. I told them I was on a tourist visa and needed sponsorship. Their reply was "Don't worry about that. We'll get going on that after you get here, but for now, we need you to get settled in and begin teaching."

I passed on their offer as it seemed to open up all kinds of problems, the biggest being that it is illegal to teach on a tourist visa. I didn't want to risk getting a legitimate C of E and work visa. I later found work elsewhere, with sponsorship.

Good for you. Some places are like that. They have you working on a tourist status while they claim your visa is being processed. When you have overstayed your tourist status and worked for them for lower wages than normal, they kick you out, withhold your last paycheck, and you have no legal recourse because you are an illegal worker who has overstayed.

JALSS are extremely dodgy. First hand information here.

Only if your desperate! They do pay on time. ( If you mail them the original copy of your time sheet!!!! Who ever heard of such crap?)

But, ask them for anything mate and expect serious headaches.

They don't even give payslips and are extremely shady when it comes to tax details.

Do NOT work for this company! I sent them my CV, indicating I wanted to apply for one of their direct hire jobs. This is the response I got:

"Sorry you cannot apply.
For the following reasons.
Not a native speaker.
No JET experience.
CELTA only pass. Not enough

You can apply for a regular alt position."

Now, I have no trouble with the 2nd & 3rd reasons. However, the first one is quite simply racist. Bear in mind, this email was sent without interviewing me, or testing my English ability in any way. After I sent a response to this email, a person by the name of Morishita responded in kind stating they had written that line because my name was "not a native English background name". Whatever that means.

There are some good ALT agencies in Japan. JALSS is obviously not one of them.

Alarm bells should ring when a dispatch company claims to have direct hire jobs. Direct hire is done directly with the BOE who often advertise the position through Hello Work, a government agency. They do not advertise through a dispatch company.
Anyone contacting this company by email or phone (and passed from one person to another...all with Japanese names) will begin to realize that the person they are communicating with is the same person! Mr. Ali...the Egyptian owner.
Anyone considering applying to this company should first checkout the jobvent.com site and look up JALSS. Here you can find stories from current and former JALSS employees. If you are still interested in applying then I have some real estate in Afghanistan I'd like to sell to you.
