I am moving to Taiwan at the beginning of the year without a job lined up. I am 25, have a college degree / TEFL certificate and teaching experience in Thailand.

I know this is a long shot but I figure its worth asking. Even if its just an e-mail address of a school. I have been negotiating with a couple of recruiting agencies but they are all very slow in responding to e-mails. I have also heard from several people to stay away from agencies.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm considering doing something similar ... moving to tw first (without a job). but the thing is .. i'm asian canadian .. it has been hard applying for teaching jobs via emails .. having them seen my photo that i have an asian face .. Sad if you are anything but asian, you are most likely gonna land a job in the first couple of weeks

have you checked out how much living costs in taiwan? i want to budget out expenses

gl!

It is tough for every teacher to find a job nowadays; regardless of what race you are.

It would be better if you have a place to stay or lined up first. Do you have any friends in Taiwan that could put you up for awhile? If not, then you may want to check the thread below about cheap lodging.

You might want to obtain a tourist visa for 60 days, so if you find something here, it could be transferred into a work visa without having to leave the Island; which will save you a few hundred USD.

There is nothing wrong with coming and looking for a job, but don't work illegally; for immigration won't think twice about deporting you. Also, when you go to the visa office overseas, it might not be a wise thing to indicate that you are visiting for the soul purpose of looking for a job.

Living expenses can be high or low depending on your life style choices. If you have friends or family in Taiwan willing to put you up for a bit, then I would suggest that you have a least 2000 USD, but if you don't have a place to stay, then I would recommend having a lot more; just in case you don't land a job.

Good luck

Thanks for the tips!
Do you by any chance know any non-teaching positions? I'm thinking of assistant positions in school that would be less strict on what you "look" like ... I'm not really going to taiwan for the money .. i just want something that pays to get started.
