When I see articles like this --- I figure it's a good time to take terms like "Happy planet," and ask students to explain the word, "Anthropomorphism."

Yes, an interesting concept that could lead to heretical conclusions if one were to investigate descriptions of the divine.

It might also be, with this example, an opportunity to introduce the Gaia hypothesis.

Don't you just l-o-v-e the way 'happiness' is being tied to 'environmentalism/being a greenie" or whatever else you want to call it? We can't be happy unless we're green. I thought Kermit said many years ago that being green wasn't easy!

If you have a family, and you all live together, is it possible for you to be happy while others in your family suffer? If your wife or husband is unhappy, you are unhappy. If you child is unhappy, you are unhappy. You find that you cannot be happy unless those around you are happy. Selfish happiness - happiness only for you - is not possible.

Dear Noor,

"If you have a family, and you all live together, is it possible for you to be happy while others in your family suffer?"

And, since all men are brothers and all women sisters, and we all live together on this big, blue ball, well, the implications are obvious.

Regards,
John

Some would suggest that the Ball is not quite as blue as it once was

At least Kermit has a hot girlfriend. No one has it tougher being green than the Hulk (though I suppose the Green Giant might be feeling the pinch of the recession)!

Considering the way so many workers, housemaids and laborers are treated, this isn't a surprise.

People in the upper income bracket usually have no issues.

Does anyone provide counseling services for laborers?

Worker kills himself in five-star hotel
Found on basement floor with burn marks to hands

By Siham Al Najami, Staff Reporter Published: 00:00 January 1, 2010
Dubai: A 38-year-old technician committed suicide while on duty in a leading five-star Dubai hotel.

He was found at midnight on December 26 by his supervisor on the basement floor with burn marks to his hands. The Sri Lankan, G.H., had been asked to maintain the operation of a generator.

"Forensic experts confirm the deliberate motivation of the technician to commit suicide from the marks and evidence found at the scene," said Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Humaid Al Merri, Director of CID at Dubai Police.

Investigations by the police revealed G.H. had problems with the management of the company he was working for. The arguments were over his end-of-service settlements and his air ticket back to his home country.

One of G.H's colleagues, who did not want to be named, said he was a "very quiet person who joined the company around 10 months ago".

"For several months he was complaining of a severe headache, but to my knowledge no one was able to identify the cause of the pain."

Last month. G.H. went to Sri Lanka for treatment but even there he did not get a proper diagnosis, said his colleague.

"I believe his sickness and the way the management dealt with his request to leave and go back home drove G.H. to commit suicide," he added.

He said a couple of days before he committed suicide, G.H. told him he was considering doing so as he could not take it anymore.

Gulf News tried contacting his company, considered a leading contractor in electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and building services in the region. A few employees confirmed the suicide but no one was available for comment. Gulf News was told senior officials were off Thursday for New Year's Eve.

Is that a serious question?

Suicides are sadly common all over the Gulf among these workers... and I suspect back home too. Most of these men are the poorest of the poor.

Hey, what about MY happiness index? What about ME? Well my happiness index is high because I don't have to spend three hours in my car in OFF-peak Dubai traffic because everybody's on their way to some new friggin' mall.
