Hello, I was wondering if anyone with experience could suggest a reasonable wage that I could expect with CELTA, MA Applied Linguistics and two years EFL experience.
Also, I wish to go to Libya with my partner of ten years (same qualifications/experience). We are not married. Is this a problem?
We can easily get married. Who said romance is dead?
Thankyou |

Unlike in that debt ridden land Dubai, an MA counts for nothing here. You have 2 main options;the language school (rubbish money) or an oil job in the desert. Oil jobs start at around 30,000GBP, 17 weeks' paid holiday pa 6 flights, BUPA health cover, food and accommodation.......they want people who can hack it. However, there are no women in the desert....only good looking camels:-) |

I'm interested in finding out more about jobs in Libya. From what sharter says there seem to be jobs with oil companies (how easy / difficult is it to get into one of those?), or language school jobs. You say the language schools pay rubbish money - what sort of money are we talking about? Bad money usually means bad conditions . . .(?) |

IH are currently recruiting on 1000 GBP per month....that is a disgrace in Libya.
Oil jobs start at 30,000GBP if you're direct and don't work for someone shabby like Bell, who cream it off and make you pay tax!
Smart Recruitment/SRS bureau, London, deal with the oil companies. |

I was going to kick off a new thread, but figured I'd just piggyback on this one.
I'm looking to move on to some new country for a change of scenery, but am needing to keep in the realm of high-paying jobs. So I was wondering about Libya. Are there any well-paying options for someone with:
BA English
CELTA
11 yrs experience, 8 in the Middle East
TEOFL prep & university foundation programs
Management experience
Problem is, I'm female... and I'm guessing women can't work in the oil jobs. Is that true? (You can in some countries, so I'm not sure about Libya.)
I've looked around all the ESL boards, and done random internet searches for "EFL Libya" or such, but haven't seen much. If there are any good jobs out there, could someone point me in the right direction?
I can do internet searches to find contact info, etc. if you don't have it handy. I'm not asking other people to do the work for me. I'm just not having much luck searching for the info cold.
Thanks. |

The above post points you in the right direction....they do have the odd opening for women!! However, it is rare. The thing is, there's tonnes of work especially with KET, PET and IELTS, it's just getting here.
All the sharks like IH, Inlingua et al are starting up and they pay really duff money. Even the BC's offer is shite.
Tripoli is awash with demand. |

Thanks for the comments and confirming that they do occasionally hire women. I appreciate your taking the time to help out faraway people like me.
To clarify, mostly the various jobs you mostly need to be in country to be hired? So the best course of action is to come into the country on some (any) job, and then change to another company that pays better?
If that's the case, is that something you can do easily? Or do contracts/government regulations/whatever else prevent it? |

Interesting the 1000 offered by IH isn't enough. It's more than what they offer in Spain and you have to pay for accommodation on top of that there.
What are the living costs like in Libya? What extra costs or burdens are there, which you wouldn't have in West Europe? |

I think when people say 1000 quid with accommodation is poor, they are looking at it in terms of it being unreasonable, among other things,:
1. firstly, for the quality of life one can expect to experience here. It's a far cry from the quality of life one might expect in Spain, for example.
2. and secondly, for the comparitvely poor offer in respect to the 'going rate' ,so to speak, especially when one considers that working on oil/gas fields, one could earn over twice as much with a rotation thrown in.
Best
Basil

Anyone know of any Yanks working ESL in Al-Jamāhīriyyah or is the visa situation a 100% no-go for a USA passport? |

Just saw an advert with the following address:-
Al Fateh University Road
Charlton Musgrove
Tripoli, Somerset
98997 - United Kingdom
.... I reckon the recruiter was drinking when he wrote that. |

1000 quid a month does not give you a good lifestyle in Tripoli, where there's jack to do anyway. The going rate is much higher.Even in Spain it'll give you no future. The IH franchise should be banned. |
