i have heard that life in Qatar is worse than Kuwait and Oman.

is this true.

i have also heard it is full of expat men with prostitutes/wives/alcoholic losers who just moved there from Saudi?

the wives are non english spleeking girls who are a quater of the age of the old fellows and are just happy not to be eating dog meat.

i know that sounds harsh BUT I SWEAR someone told me that
a tefl er in qatar...who also said the students were hopeless...

now i am just looking for some positive info cause i never hear it from qatar...

is it true that wild dogs are caught and sold to the local 'asians' like Koreans and Philipinos???

I swear I heard it.

It's actually a fairly pleasant place to live. Not the most exciting place in the world.... but pleasant.

You get all sorts who live here, though some of the people you describe are somewhat stereotypical

I think people are still talking about how it was 5 years ago. Things have changed and it's not THAT bad. They are developing the city and we are seeing changes.........

Dog meat is pretty expensive; I doubt if their husbands could afford to buy it them on a TEFLer's salary.

What are "spleeking girls"?

That sounds like it might be fun...

One thing to remember is Qatar is a country within the ME.

There are others but some things the OP addressed was (and are) not necessarily the way to decide whether it is a decent place to live or not.

Posters have posted comments on the KSA and never lived there - this may be accurate or the result of knowledge gained from books, internet, friends and colleagues.

Exchange of information is vital and if you have a passport then fly (first class is not necessary) to the main airport, check in your duffel bag, duty free chocolates and explore what is on offer.

Hail a taxi or catch a cab - an ideal opportunity to ask questions to the driver :-

1.) Where are the best places ?
2.) Can you get me there without more than a 5% tip ?
3.) Is wearing a jacket without a tie in MOST of the clubs needed ?
4.) Is wearing a tie in the best club strictly enforced ?

A consideration that others have addressed is the quality and the quantity of DVDs and books by Follett.

Best advice : keep an open mind, don't believe ALL that glitters and make sure the exchange rate is to your advantage. (not the banks)

Best ... AND if the embassy does ask questions about dress style or fashion brands (Nike, Adidas, Kappa) refer them to the home page.

Being an alcoholic loser I liked the place.Seriously though it's a nice place especially if you aren't single.I lived in Doha between 2001 and 2003,was married and had a nipper there. There's loads to do but you have to spend money ie join a gym, a beach club etc etc.A lot of the people who moan about the place are just part of the tea bag stealing brigade.
Teaching was a challenge as the students at QP were rarely interested and the management was tyrannical.Living and working with 80 colleagues was also a nightmare as you couldn't avoid people and people were always accusing people of saying this or that.Let's face it, many teflers in the ME are freaks anyway.
Qatar on balance is good and I'd go there again if I hadn't just got out of tefl.
