It's awesome that the population density is 378.7 people per square mile, but the town is only 0.8 square miles and so the population (319) is lower than the density amount.

It's like counting the number of people crammed into a crowded subway car in Tokyo, and figuring out how many people would be in it if the subway car were one square mile.

The APA WRITERS MANUAL( American Psychiatric Association) is the "bible", when it comes to writing formates and style(including white papers, internet, etc).

Dear rogerwallace,

Isn't the APA format used (mostly) in the social sciences whereas the MLA format is used (mostly) in the liberal arts and humanities?

Regards,
John

yes, sometimes. I let some PHd's copy mine at a chinese univ. so they could get their enginerring/math papers out of the country as they would just be "taken" by someone in the capital. White papers are done w/apa too.

The APA, MLA, CMOS, etc. are only "the bible" for those that choose to follow or dictate the use of them. They are style guides, not arbitrators of the English language.

It's more than a style guide, it's either in format or it doesn't get read or published. But yes, English is as English does. To be literate is to be able to read and write in a language so others can understand what your saying and hearing and for others to understand you.

My copy says "style guide" on it. Wink

Which I guess is my way of pointing out- Yes, academic writing needs to conform to the conventions of academic writing, or it won't go anywhere.

But there are lots of conventions besides those of academic writing, and yes, things get written, published, and read every day without conforming to APA, MLA, or anything else in particular.

Best,
Justin

And it is a damned good thing. Much writing ignores, plays with, or deliberately violates "conventions".

Dear desultude,

'Much writing ignores, plays with, or deliberately violates "conventions".'

Amen - and writers such as William Faulkner, e e cummings, and James Joyce were notorious offenders. Smile

John

ah yes but offenders who knew what the conventions were in the first place and also had a rare and precious talent combined with something to say and so were able to break conventions artfully in the same way that picasso was an excellent draughtsman and anatomist to rival even raphael though of course he found richer expression in cubism

Yes, you are of course right. And I actually refer to Picasso when I try to convince my students of the necessity of grammar.
