Well, let that be a lesson to you, Charisma. That's the way this place works..and you can't blame all of it (ok, you can blame most of it) on the local nationals. I have worked for Brits, Canadians, Americans, and Australians in the M.E. who were unspeakable scoundrels.
Consider yourself lucky. When I first arrived in the "Miracle that is Dubai!!!", I met a group of Canadians who'd been hired by HCT to set up some new branch or project or whatever. They were all in their 40's and assumed they'd have the job until retirement or at least for a good chunk of time. Within a year and a half... They'd all been fired.
At least two of them pled their case before HCT Admin. "Look, we sold our homes , our belongings and quit decent jobs in Toronto to move to"The Multi-cultural Miracle that is Dubai!!!" HCT's response...."Next."
In three years, I haven't met anyone working for them who had a high opinion of the place. I guess it's better than most military jobs...but that's about it. |

| All our speculations and especially mine were off the mark. I'm glad you still have jobs and cars and a house. If you should accept a future Middle East position, I think I can speak for the veterans and myself here when I say it's better to rent out your house than to sell it, unless you really need the cash. |

The problem with being a Canadian is that even if you are offshore the US equivilant of the IRS has NOTHING on CRC. They will try and claw back every peseta, dirhamk, riyal, pence, penny, you name it and give exactly NOTHING in return.
You cannot get medical care (depending on the province you return to) for 3 - 6 months AFTER you get Canadian residency recognized, as an important example. It doesn't matter that you paid into the various government plans (unemployment, paid taxes, pension, etc. for decades prior to leaving Canada).
You pay before you leave, you continue to pay while you are away and they will try and get every red cent you ever earned anywhere anytime and give you a poor infrastructure (roads, medical care - waiting lists, and just general government services of any kind) in return. |

We had the same thought - and now we have a disappointed renter, too. The only things we were planning to sell were our two older cars. |

The position he was offered has been eliminated for the time being due to budgetary issues.

Oops - guess Festival of Thinkers was over-budget, this year.......
Take heart, CC --- at least he's taking a back seat to a bunch of Nobel laureates that are soooo, soooo important to the students at HCT. |
