| @JoelOneFifty: So is this 'provisional employment' offer a sure sign that were hired? |
Pretty much, or so that's what my interviewer told me. If you get a provisional employment offer, then that means you're pretty much hired. If you don't reply within a week, then they offer the position to someone else.
That's also the impression I got from the e-mail,
| Quote: |
| We would provisionally like to offer you a position. Please read over the "General ALT Contract" as attached and go through the "Agreement of Contract Principles" which is also attached. Should you have any question regarding the contract, please let us know. When you agree, please fill out and return the "Agreement of Contract Principles" by email or FAX within 1 week. Then we would officially like to offer you a position. |
Reading over this information in the contract...I'm growing very tempted again to take them up on the offer and just go the more correct (imo) route of going through the Visa process and letting them know it.
The money might not turn out great, but it's better than doing nothing here at home.
I'm still curious if anyone has worked through Heart and had a good experience with them. I only come across negative stuff. The positive is far and in between. |

I haven't been given a date for the training yet, although we've been in almost daily communication so hopefully I'll know soon! I was told there will be more than one training session and they haven't split people up into groups at the moment.
I also enquired about my visa application, and was told that the COE should be with them in 4 to 6 weeks, and they'd let me know when they had it. I really don't know why other people have been told about arriving on a tourist visa. |

In my case, they sent me an email today telling me I have 10 days (until Feb 1) for me to comply with my VISA requirements. Im guessing im probably a little late or at least among those they hired quite late.
I'm having trouble with my health certificate since medical exam results usually aren't ready by then.
Also, i wonder if they would be providing accommodations for us (at least temporarily) in Mito, Ibaraki. After all, we might be assigned in locations outside the area. |

What kind of nonsense bullying is that? You are an American in the Philippines. What exactly do they want you to accomplish in the next 10 days? File for your visa/COE? Ok, easily enough. Beyond that, I'm amazed.
When does their job start? If it's the academic year like most ALTs would operate under, you'd have until first week in April, last week in March earliest. Plenty of time.

Why do you need that?

Haven't you already asked that? Seems to be a logical first step after visa sponsorship. |

I don't think the deadline is quite as strict as that, they also asked me to send everything within two weeks. It seemed to me more of a polite request than a demand. Also the medical certificate does not need to be submitted as part of the visa application, so I suggest you sort the other stuff out first. I haven't finished my medical yet. |

| Does anyone here have any idea as to when successful applicants are supposed to arrive in Japan? It would definitely be easier on those booking flights. |

My current Heart contract goes through the last full week of March, and I THINK the contract said something about if I renewed then I would have to attend the training (I only had a couple-hour orientation as an in-country hire). So I would guess it's the last week of March. If you've got a little money saved, why not come a little early and spend some time in Tokyo? |

Because I don't have much money to do that.
Also, do you know if we have to pay for the hotel/hostel stuff during training, or does Heart pay for it? |

| The only thing I could fin was that the the prospective teacher needs to pay for the ride to Mito. Nothing is said about paying for a room for training. |

I hope this helps:
Accommodation:
During your training you will need to pay for your accommodation. Heart Language School will organize a hostel room for you at 4000 yen per day. If they have trouble finding housing for you then you can stay in the hostel for 3500 yen a day until your apartment is ready.
Glenski:
Heart Language School requires all of its ALTs to undertake a medical certificate or general medical check prior to employment and prior to contract renewal. It has nothing to do with immigration and more to do with the fact they advertise their ALTs as 'disease free' to the BOE.
Tourist Visa:
You are right to be afraid. This seems a lot like a 'you turn up and then they go "sorry no job."' You basically can't complain as they can deny knowledge of you.
Provisional Employment offers:
Well what does it mean? Basically, you don't have a job, you have a offer of a job. Unfortunately, until you sign a contract no job actually exists. This is something to be aware of as some companies hire in mass and then weed out what they don't need through placement offers. It is a dangerous game and you need to be prepared if things go belly up.
Medical Certificate:
They don't have a specific form. Your handbook will tell you what you need to know. Otherwise, talk to the HR team, I guess.
Contract Renewal:
You would need to do a reorientation I think, from memory.
Arrival:
End of March from what I have heard. The HR team probably will start getting back to people in mid-late Feb I would imagine.
None of this is gospel. All of it is second hand knowledge. (I may or may not have a job offer as well - i.e. don't work for Heart, yet.)
P.s., I would be quite keen to hear what people think of Heart as well. Honest company? etc. |

That's dumb, imo. They should inform one of this on the site's FAQs section. So, candidates not only have to pay to go over there, they have to pay for their own accommodations during training too? Don't most companies that hire candidates from overseas and have training usually pay for stuff like that? On the site, it just said, "You will stay at a youth hostel/hotel in Mito until the apartment is ready. After the training session, you will move into an apartment if the apartment is ready. Its usually in 2-5 days."

That's crazy too. They should just say straight up if you're hired or not. My interviewer didn't tell me this at all. He pretty much said that if one received the Provisional Employment offer, and responded to it within the allotted time, that you were pretty much hired and accepting it, and how you'll have to just sign all the final documentation once arriving there after all the paper work at all that.
I was okay at first, but now I'm having doubts on this again. We're going through all the trouble of getting Work Visas approved and then there's a chance that we might not even have a job when arriving there. How backwards! |

Still trying to confirm whether ALTs have to pay for their own lodging during training.
I was told that if we got the provisional employment offer we had the job. The thing is they don't know where each new alt will be teaching until they (the ALT) interview with the school board or whatever they are called in Japan. Just going by what I was told when I asked about it in the interview. |

Wow, someone that's actually worked for Heart! You're a rare species around here. Would you care to give an honest appraisal of your time with the company? |
