So I got my first job offer since arriving in Taiwan a week ago and passing out resumes by hand.

It's few hours to start but the Taiwanese family that runs the cram school is insanely nice. Giving me gifts, taking me out to eat, taking me to museums and tours, driving me all over town...

The offered me the job and told me my schedule yesterday. I thought the first thing they would want was to have me sign a contract, but so far, there has been absolutely no mention of it.

I'm mostly nervous about getting my ARC. Surely, they must know that I need one, as I've only been in the country for a short time and I can only get it through an employer.

So what's the deal? Is there a reason they haven't laid out the logistics for me yet? Are they hiding something? Are they just that laid back that we'll get around to that stuff later?

If it makes any difference, I'm in Yilan City.

Ask them? How many hours is it? Without 14 hours you can't get an ARC I believe. I would just ask them, be upfront about it because no-one will look after you in Taiwan other than yourself and it is very common for bosses to ignore the law and make you do things that could get you deported if caught etc.

You can survive given plenty of determination, a deep pocket and a good travel agent with an ARC but anyone in their right mind will tell you that you must ensure any contract has in writing a minimum 14 hours. A few hours won't do. People can be nice now but can cut up rough later. And without the right paperwork you'll be looking for a paddle in the creek you'll be in.

Apologies. First sentence should be "....without an ARC" NOT "with an ARC"!

Doh!
