Oryx definitely had its good side, and I am certainly willing to admit that. It was a very comfortable place to live, and I miss living there in a lot of ways. However, as other posters will confirm, maintenance is not a Saudi strong suit, and I didn't like having dangerous things falling around me.
Security was not good at Oryx, and there was also a problem with "djinn". I'm not saying I necessarily believe in these supernatural beings, but the place sat empty for a long time before we occupied it, and there were certainly some scary noises and odd occurrences. Ask anyone who lived there about the moving furniture noises. I think desultude can confirm this one! |

Wow always heard ablout such stuff, but never heard anyone having an encounter...did it help pass the time playing with the djinn? Did you communicate with it? |

Well, Teta Mia, it must be the Red Djinns which were behind the odd occurences in your villa, they do not like human beings share the same bathroom and toilet, and they have strong power, even they can reside in your body as well! BTW, why did you not see a sheikh to check if he could 'eject' the Red Djinn from your villa? |

If anyone would like to have contact with experts in the field of exorcising jinns from their chosen abodes, I can provide directions, for a fee, of course. There are quite a few guys in Bahla and Rustaq in Oman who can take the gin and the jinn even out of Bush and Bin Laden and they won't know it.
The poltergeist lives on, in many names and guises, in lands as far from one another as Taipei and Timbuctoo, and those who enjoy his presence rather than fear it, are at peace.
The poltergeist is a healthy companion.

The British Council puts EFL teachers on Arabian Homes Compounds - nice villas and very well maintained - you don't even need to change your own light bulbs - one call to the maintenance department and within a couple of days (usually) they come and put up your pictures, fix your washing machine or do whatever needs doing. The compounds are clean and well looked after by gardeners and look quite nice in a funny sort of way. Great for families.
The downside is that teachers get just 40 days a year holiday which is not as much as others at universities.
It depends on what your after - I've heard that the villas cost 120,000 SAR a year - I certainly wouldn't pay for it myself, that's for sure.

Having decent housing is essential when you are working in KSA. Life and work here can be very stressful and you need a place to escape from the horrors of daily life.
One reason why you should NEVER, EVER considering sharing. ARE YOU LISTENING BAe ? |
