Have a contract to work 6 months, 6 hours daily, 4 day-week for $17 gross (in Dong). Accom provided, no other benefits; is this a good contract? What else should I be considering?
Thanx |

Consider:
What kind of accom is it? Are bills included?
Where is the school located? Where is the accom in relation to the school?
Who are you teaching? What are you expected to know?
Will the school provide you with the necessary support and paper work to allow you to get a work permit?
Is everything agreed verbally or in writing?
That would be a start for me.... |

Teaching Av Eng to pilots/controllers at Gia Lam airport, a short distance (how long in the traffic, though?) across the river from the city.
The sticking point is the accomodation; the company are offering a private "guesthouse" on-site (which they claim to be secure and to Western standards), for me and my wife, but without a kitchen. We don't fancy dining on Pho every day thank you! This costs them $200 to rent. Alternatively, they will contribute $200 to the cost of an apartment, and for me to pay the rest; is it feasible to consider a small, decent, flat (with broadband and sat TV) for around, say, $400, bills inc?
On completion of the contract, what are the prospects of staying on, finding work at a reputable school for teaching adults to IELTS standard? |

That sounds like an interesting job. On that salary, hopefully with a little "start-up" money in the bank, you can get what you're looking for, no problem. As for the kitchen and the short-term issue, it would seem best to take the company housing for a month or two while you get acquainted with your options. Talk to people. I guarantee somebody's cousin has a very cool pad waiting for you and your family. As for finding more work, my guess is that you'll be turning down other job opportunities before you finish your contract there.
I don't know exactly about distance, as I don't know exactly where along the river the place is. You just want to be close to both work and interesting stuff and not under the flight path. I wonder if googlemaps can find that address so you can evaluate it. Otherwise, you can post a more accurate address and someone here can comment.
I'd say that overall that sounds like good hours, good pay, and interesting work. If it starts immediately, you'd be working through the holiday, which not everybody can do. And this is the best weather of the year. It's been great. |
