English is the first language in Singapore.

Prejuvenile and juvenile students are taught English at schools.

If there any adults wanting to learn English they would be so minimal you would starve.

The best advice is for you to get a PGCE and try to get employment in one of the schools.

However, you may find better returns on your money with a PGCE in other countries especially Britain.

...but Singapore is becoming increasingly populated by mainland Chinese as well as Vietnamese and Indonesians creaming themselves to learn English. There are also sizeable Korean and Japanese expat communities.

You will find a job, but it's best to turn up and look for one, rather than expecting to find something decent online.

Salaries aren't the best for the amount of hours that you work, but Singapore is very affordable and is a beautiful place.

vietnamalien,

Generally speaking it seems that you need at least a degree (B. Ed.) with a PGCE to enter public schools. International schools also require high standards for prospective teachers.

Scumbag language schools have a lower requirement for teachers.

While there are some posters promoting Singapore and it can be said that Singapore is clean (?) and green, it must also be said that the dirt under the carpet is such that it will trip you and you may break your neck.

Caveat Emptor!

Should you have good credentials then maybe goals further a field would be to your benefit.

As a side interest there are some big International schools (Thailand and Hong Kong at least) advertising on various URLs who pay extremely good money. However, they demand a high standard of credentials from their applicants.

Bangkok is about, if I remember right, about one and a half hours flight.

My guess is that while there are language schools specialising in different aspects of English Language skills, unlike per se: Korea, Japan, Thailand and other places, there are topics which need to be discussed on this forum.

If you should be contemplating Singapore as a destination for work as a teacher, remember the old addage:

Caveat Emptor.

Sounds about right, plus 5 minutes since they moved to Suvarnabhumi airport LOL.

And yes, the lingua franca in Singapore is indeed English.

I was a lecturer at the National University of Singapore and signed a contract for three years...some of the best three years of my life. They gave you a moving in bonus $3,000 Singapore Dollars, two weeks to get settled and a teaching load of 15 class hours a week with two office hours a week. Great paid vacation time of about two months a year and within the first year I got three pay hikes. At the end of your three year contract, I received 30% of my three year salary since they have a matching cont. fund...you put in 500 sing. dollars and they match it...Great place to work...all you need is a BS degree.

Does anyone know if there is night work in Singapore?

Is it possible to work from 4 to 7 or so?

You might get a job at a poor paying language school with these hours you are looking for.

Remember this, living costs are extremely high in Singapore.

Living costs = accommodation, utilities, food, transportation, entertainment, new clothing plus what ever else you may enjoy doing.

A job paying at least S$4k will be required.
