Hi,

I have trawled through lots of posts, and it seems that the majority of you are Americans. I am a Brit, but with few qualification. Well, I have a 1st-class BA Hons in Linguistics, and a CELTA cert. I have 3 years' experiance, however this was informal one-to-one teaching, and not in a school.
TeachAway looks great, but it is for North Americans only... the UK does not have any sort of teaching licence. And is UAE even interested in Brit. English speakers?
I'd really appreciate your help, and I'm sure I've repeated questions from others.... hope it's not too terribly tedious...

The UK most certainly does have teaching licences and teachaway is not only for N Americans.

Your problem is definitely not that you are British, your problem is your lack of credentials and experience. In fact, everywhere I worked in the Gulf was a majority British or perhaps more accurately, not American. It may be that there are slightly more Americans posting here (not sure if that is true or not), but this is an American based website open to all.

And doner is right... there is a British teaching license and teachaway is hiring any native speaker of English with their national credentials/license.

Young and with a first-why TEFL?

ok, maybe I should give you a little more info.... but first, thanks for all your help Smile

I also study Arabic, and want to go and live in the Middle East to practice for a few years, before doing my Master's. I also really enjoyed teaching when I did it as a student. I know the education situation/system is totally different there, but I consider myself a very resilient and adaptable person.
I double-check, and TeachAway if definately for North Americans only.
Also: the Teaching Licence in England only starts Sept 2010. Unless you are talking about something else?

Jesus H Christ what do think PGCEs and QTS and the old cert eds were?

Learning Arabic go to Egypt.

ok, there may have been some misunderstanding... of course I know about PGCE etc, but I thought these were more qualifications, than licences. But as I said, I am new to this.
I have no ties, no bills in the UK to pay, and am not particularly interested in making tonnes of cash. Just a job and an experience really. I know I enjoyed teaching before, so to me, it makes sense - and I have a CELTA.
I really appreciate any advice, and to hear about other's experience.

OK jojo... now that we know the money isn't important, but polishing up your Arabic is, I suggest that you look at Egypt or Syria. (or even Morocco, Jordan, or Lebanon) With a bit of hustle, you should be able to round up enough work in language schools and private lessons to at least, pay your bills. The Gulf is way too expensive and you need a work visa. North Africa and the Levant are more laid back and cheap.

Not to mention that they are better places to learn Arabic (because you will actually need it for daily life)... and they are fun places to live and work as I assume that you are younger...

I believe I saw Teach Away is interviewing in London. Teachanywhere does as well according to their website.

Does this mean that they are going to London to interview Americans and Canadians? I don't know why I would be confused by this. Rolling Eyes
