Hey folks,
I'm trying to find out if providers are moving en masse to GSM or whether there is, and will be, a good CDMA network in Saigon. I originally got an iPod touch with the intent of just buying a cheapo phone for local and using the iPod touch and a TomTom for maps, translation, etc., but the new droid and google's turn-by-turn gps technology... well, that's just awesome. But the European GSM version doesn't off the google turn-by-turn while the US CDMA version does. So, if there is and will be good CDMA there, I might just have to plunk down for a droid. In which case, I will have a hardly-used 3rd Gen iPod touch for sale! |

They have only just awarded 3G licences here. You can occasionally pick up a free wifi connection as you are mosying about. I use a 2g iphone and generally get by just loading in where I want to go and looking at it offline. Saigon isn't so hard to get from a-to b in by just following your nose, particularly Q1 and Q3. |

Well, if that's the case, I'll follow your lead: load up at hotspots, follow my nose, and go.
That's classic: navigating by smell. An article waiting to be written, yo! |

Hi following up on this thread a few months later!
Question: I'm in the US now and contemplating a move to Vietnam--with an iPhone in hand. (However, it's an iPhone with an AT&T subscription.) I'm okay with canceling that subscription early and paying the early termination fee, but will I have usage in Vietnam with an unlocked/jailbroken 3Gs phone? Anyone have any experience doing this? How many carriers in Vietnam support the 3G network?
Thanks in advance! |

The GSM version of the Droid is called the Milestone. Currently it nor other phones that use Google maps or other map systems except a few offer turn by turn in Vietnam. Very dissapointing. All Google will show is your position on the map. You can type in an address and it will roughly show you on map where it is but no routing or turn by turn
*update* New version of Google maps 3.4 now gives routing in Saigon! Unfortunately it does not give voice instructions but does give turn by turn in routing. Works great!

Mobifone and Vinaphone are 2 GSM carriers that currently have 3G here in Saigon. Your iPhone should work fine as long as it is WCDMA 900/2100 which I believe that the iPhone 3G is. Unlocking /jailbreaking is very easy. You Tube has many videos how to do it |
