I have read many times that men should avoid wearing shorts in Saudi.

Now, if I were to join Gold's Gym in Jeddah, would I still have to refrain from wearing shorts?

Also, does anyone have any information about gyms/costs in Jeddah.

Many thanks in advance.

In a gym, of course not.

Outside, well, as I wrote in another thread: I worked with a guy (back in 2007) who would go on shopping trips to Riyadh malls wearing a tatty t-shirt and shorts. I personally found it distasteful (as I do in America and elsewhere) but no-one ever said a word to him.

Some others have had different experiences.

When doing sports you can wear shorts, although some places may expect "Islamic shorts". Away from the gym and off the playing feild or running track, you should dress more "modestly".

What are Islamic shorts?

The shorts that I use for the gym are down to the knee like regular surf shorts - not the nut-hugging speedo kind Very Happy

I have said this many times on here.

Shorts in Jeddah in public are fine. I see them often in malls, on streets, in fast food places and cafes.

Gold's Gym is very expensive. I think the basic membership costs SR. 6,000 per year.

You can join one of the many other gyms found in Jeddah (usually at the top of apartment buildings) for around SR. 100 to SR. 200 per month, and have access to pretty much the same equipment as at Gold's.

There are a few other fancy gyms as well (similar to Gold's), and they are also expensive.

Trap is right. My husband wears shorts (to the knees) all the time here.
