Thanks Shiori.

BTW, Akihibara is not an essential item at all, just a suggestion, as I spent quite a lot of time around Ueno/Akihibara when I was on holiday in Japan, though I'm also familiar with Shinjuku and Shibuya.

I can see lofts having their own good points, but it's just not for me. Nuh uh.

EDIT: Glenksi, there's really no need for your righteous indignation regarding my "nonsense" comment. I think you took it rather too seriously. I'm not being dismissive or one of those raging idiots expecting everything to be Westernised or some such, I merely wanted some clarification as to the terminology. But point taken, I could have Googled it. And while I said I'd like a room with a bed in, I'd be very happy with a futon instead - just not a loft. If you think that still makes me some kind of moron, so be it.

I'm not really sure what the Shane people mean by single and double apartments, since it's not standard terminology here- real estate agents will always use the 1DK, 2LDK abbreviations that we've been using- maybe you could ask the Shane people to say exactly what the apartments are in those terms? As a few of us have said, it is quite normal for 2 people to live in a one bedroom apartment here (1DK or 1LDK), but not in a 1-room apartment (1R) since those are tiny.

In defense of Glenski, I have to say that I was a bit taken aback by the "nonsense" thing as well when I read it. You may have meant no disrespect, but it did sound quite dismissive of the system used here, and this being an internet forum we have no way of knowing if people are joking or not when they say things like that.

So, with Shiori's experience with Shane apartments (very helpful here!) and the info I've provided, just what exactly is Shane saying will cost 110,000 vs. a smaller place?

Once we know that, I think it's a matter of knowing the location and you deciding whether you want either place for the two of you.

And, I never called you a moron. I stand by my statement on your use of the word "nonsense". I think you could have chosen a far better word, don't you? I mean, think of it. How would you feel if someone used that word for certain things in your own country which are normal?

I'd feel like someone was asking for guidance, being friendly and using colloquial language. But obviously that's just me.

Shiori,
I see no need to point those things out as an excuse to be "not calm". It was merely pointed out that he insulted / disrespected the culture with a flippant remark and should have known better.

I think the only way someone is going to learn the meaning behind the backlash is to experience the culture, not simply have lots of work to do here. People get all upset over certain things without realizing / learning that it is just the way it is here. Like using North American and British English to describe certain parts of a car (e.g., boot and trunk), instead of using just one English. Is that "nonsense"? No, it's just the way it is.

Basically the moral of the story is not to refer to any aspect of a foreign culture that is new to you as nonsense, even in jest, as you run the risk of offending people. When you realise you have offended people, even mildly, best not to then tell them to calm down, as people have a right to consider something offensive or inappropriate.

Anyway, we've probably devoted enough time to this topic.

Shiori,
Didn't mean to offend you at all. Just wanted to point out where the main focus should have been. Sorry. Besides, I think we were all very calm in our responses. Pretty polite and logical, too, unlike a few other forums I could mention. Smile

I'm not "going head to head" with anyone. As Apsara pointed out, we've devoted enough time to this. I think mushroom gets the point by now.
