The university that I worked for paid 60,000 riyals regardless of the number of children. This would cover maybe 1 1/2 or 2 children at the Dhahran Academy, usually considered the best English-speaking school for American kids. It could also cover a larger percentage of the education for the kids if they went to a less prestigious school. (Not something I would recommend, though - some of the private "English" schools are awful.)

However, I heard that they had allegedly cut that to 25,000 riyals for Arabic-speaking children (who can attend less expensive schools) even if the working parent(s) held American or other Western passports. I knew of a Jordanian-American teacher who did not review his contract for precisely this reason. He had several school-aged children, and he just couldn't afford to pay such a large amount of money on tuition for his kids. And he was a math teacher....making much more than a lowly ESL teacher.

This is due to the fact that the tuition gets more expensive as the child moves up through the grades. Sixty thousand riyals might pay the tuition for two elementary school children, but maybe only one high school student.

True, but I guess you could say that an employer offering an educational allowance to one child would be considered accomodating a lifestyle choice

Yes, and those employers who do this are doing the relevant staff a favour, for which they should be grateful. There is no legal obligation for employers to pay any education allowance at all, and an increasing number do not.
