Hey, I did do a search but most of the info is outdated!
Can I ask, on a salary of 8.5million a month in Jakarta. Is it possible to rent ur own 1 bed apartment and still have enough to have a good time?
Plz help!
Thanks |

Unfortunately, the answer is no. The cheapest 1 bedroom apartments in central Jakarta can be had at Taman Rasuna and Sudirman Park. They will set you back a minimum of Rp3.5 million/month. Add another Rp800 000 for electricity, maid and water. That only leaves you around Rp4 million/month or $14 a day for everything else. Far from comfortable living.
On the other hand, you could possibly share a 2 bedroom apartment with someone for around Rp2.5 million/month. Living in these complexes it's also quite easy to advertise your services as a tutor and earn an extra couple of million/month. Then it's looking more possible. |

I do not know if Rayman's quote with regard to the rent includes the monthly service charge, which can be anything from 500,000 - 1,000,000 with the above utilities costs on top.
Buying an apartment requires a hefty deposit and a high interest rate of between 12% (introductory offer for several months) through to 17% by some banks. There is also a large sales tax to pay which is split between the buyer and the seller.
There are many cheap apartments in Jakarta, but these are far from the centre and are cheap for a very good reason - because they are concrete boxes. |

I think the Rp800ribu for utilities/maid is a little on the low side, too. Proper apartments in Jakarta are horribly overpriced because people will pay literally anything to avoid a lengthy commute.
You can rent a big house in Bogor or Serpong for the price of a thin-walled concrete box in the CBD but would you want to spend 3-4 hours per day travelling to work?
And, yes, it IS possible to exist on as little as Rp1mill spending money per month. Millions of Indonesians live on less. But would you want to do it? |

Depending on how good you want your times to be, you may find that you won't have much change from your 8.5
Even if you managed to budget your weekend good times at 1 million a week, there will not be much left over once you have factored in your food, travel and daily expenses - not to mention the buying of Western goods.
8.5 is enough to have a good time in Jakarta or a miserable time counting the pennies. |
