This thread caught my attention because I have a group interview coming up with ECC. I have experience as a writing tutor, including working with ESL students, but I'm a bit concerned about traveling to Toronto when it seems like the hiring staff almost know who they are looking for before the candidates even show up.
I'd appreciate any advice. |

I don't understand exactly what you are asking for. In terms of the grammar test, study commonly misspelled words, parts of speech (i.e. Prepositions, clauses), and ESL teaching terms. For the mock lesson, be yourself and teach as if teaching to young children with very limited English.
However your statement about not being sure about going all the way to Toronto, well that is the business these days. If you want the job bad enough and you feel you are qualified enough, then flying up there should be no problem. I did it and was hired, so have several others. Think of it as a down payment on your future.
Now when you said something about the interviewers knowing what type of people they want to hire....all I cab say is welcome to the work force. It's not just ECC, it not just teaching jobs in japan, it's every job. Of course interviewers hava preferences, why wouldn't they?? Now I nor can really anyone else tell or instruct you on how to act during the interview process, because you just need to be yourself. Either you are what they want or you are not, but don't pretend to be someone else. Interviewers become interviewers because for the most part they can judge character and they can spot fakes. And nothing will get you out of consideration for a job is being fake.
(this post wasn't checked for spelling errors because it was posted using my iPod touch, laptop is in the shop with a nasty virus) |

I don't think they know who they're looking for before you show up.
I didn't get a job and I have experience teaching, a teaching certification and people say I'm quite good looking.
Look at going to Toronto as a vacation first, then if you don't get a job you won't be disappointed. I had a nice weekend there.
As for advice, look up commonly misspelled words on the internet and be yourself during the mock lesson, if he don't like who you are look for another job. I got a job that pays much better than ECC albeit in Korea but I'm happy here.
Finally, if he gives you suggestive language about having a position in the personal interview don't get your hopes up until you get the actual result by email because you might be quite disappointed. |

Do a search on this website, there are a few people that lay out nearly everything that happens, including some specific words like sommelier that were on the test.
I got the job, but I didn't get placed. Two weeks after the interview I was given the offer, after long periods of no communication I moved on, I don't intend to wait on them. (Interviewed Nov 09, next possible placements begin June, if at all).
Best of luck to those that apply, don't be bashful or shy and have fun with the presentation. |

Man, I wish I would have found this post before I went to the interview! Hehe it would have been mega helpful Nonetheless, I interviewed in Toronto, and dissimilar to you many of you guys, I walked out of my interview having no idea what so ever of how I did. He said he was asking certain questions to "build my case to headquarters," I'm not quite sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing though. Anywhoo- after my interview, I have two questions for you folks 1.) I know they say expect results in 15 days, I was curious how long it took for you guys to get your results, and did it come in the form or an e-mail or phone call? and 2.) Were you guys asked any "off the record" questions? I was, and so I was just curious if it was a trick or an honest off the record question. |

1. 14 days later I got an e-mail saying that I would get an e-mail tomorrow. 1 day later I got the e-mail with the offer. Could be different in your case.
2. I might have got out of this by asking them an off-the-record question. Nothing in particular stands out.
Best of luck you guys. |
