Sarcasm. Not exactly communicative.

So, please, as a favor to us peons of the English Language, would you parse the sentence I cited:
"I was addressing the administration dynamics of Westerners and Arabs as they contend success with Saudi investment"
This seems to me to be elliptical at best, and maybe a bit of obfuscation. |
Well, I had parsed 'contend success' and to the phrasing of "addressing..." I was elaborating on my take on the "hit list" memo. I though assuming it was an accident was an assumption deserving of another look.

I don't accept your opinion speaks for a totality of readership. Your use of "us" is presumptive. Given your sarcasm, I doubt any effort will meet with success. |

As the topic of this thread has shifted from PMU to understanding your posts, I would say that I do speak for some.
I really do prefer clarity to obfuscation.
Clarity of expression bespeaks clarity of thought and mind. |

"I've discovered many middle-easterners have chauvinisms toward Saudi Arabia possessed with self-serving excuses more often attributed to an 'imperialist' Westerner that views their 'standards' as challenging Saudi Arabia's global competitiveness."

I'll tell you what. Much of your writing is appallingly pretentious, wordy and turgid. Guess what--Henry Miller or whoever you're trying to emulate doesn't live here anymore. Even the worst hack editor would laugh you out of print, assuming you'd ever get there in the first place. |

I guess that is clearer and more direct than my sarcasm. |

What's amusing is while one poster claims my posts are not fit for publication, another compares them to critically studied authors-- just not authors of his liking. Writing is a craft. Come to recognize its many forms.
This forum has evolved a "norm" of rhetoric and it's disturbing with what vehemence syntax beyond its norms is met. Typical, but disturbing. A popular consensus is usually barbarous. What is common is the abandonment of arguing the merits of claims and attacking the style of dissent.
Qualifying language as BS is little other than informing others of one's tastes. It's simple derision and beneath an educator.
Given the mis-readings and frequent biases expressed on this board, I'm indifferent to becoming "unpopular" among a few individuals that offer no basis for their reasoning other than the citing of degrees and "I used to be in Saudi Arabia, and let me tell you, you don't want to go there." |

No, Camel. Sheikh is employing presented sarcasm instead of your literal. Consider: "Even the worst hack editor would laugh you out of print, assuming you'd ever get there first."
Now that's a wonderful construct. It presents sarcasm. And when constructed well, is widely accepted despite its logic. Sheikh invokes a mantle of authority by presenting an editor-- someone in the position of judging my posts. Sheikh then exaggerates his editor as superlatively poor in quality. Though it is more likely a poor editor would accept substandard writing, Sheikh's editor dismisses my posts by summary, genuine reaction-- laughter.
Such narrative as criticism is first developed in adolescents, usually accompanied by sound effects.
So, you see, Sheikh's sarcasm is merely more sophisticated, not clear. |

Yes, it's a craft, but you haven't learned it yet. Camel is right--on a forum, write to communicate, not to dazzle, impress and mystify us. You're not makin' it. |

Who knows--perhaps in the words of Agent Scully, the purpose is to "deceive, inveigle and obfuscate." But then, we can't be sure, from that divine and borderline prose, can we? |

The subject matter reminds me of the last dying words of John Wilkes Booth.
After being shot by Corbett and dragged from the burning barn, Booth asked that his hands be raised before him as it were these hands that had killed Lincoln. When they were, he muttered, "Useless, useless...", and then expired...

LCK reminds me of another poster who used to post here last year, perhaps his username was "Shakespeare"?
This is an ESL forum, not an academic forum for those doing PhDs in English. Because you must admit, even a non-academic forum for those doing PhDs in English would display simple language. |

Dear NCTBA,
Speaking of last words, how about these:
"Statements made by Arthur (Dutch Schultz) Flegenheimer were taken down by a Newark police stenographer, F. J. Lang. The notes covered a period from about 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon until Schultz died. During that period he was delirious most of the time, but lucid at intervals. A transcript of all he said follows:
Schultz at this time was irrational, suffering with a fever of 106 degrees and a bullet in his stomach. Sergeant Luke Conlon and other detectives from Newark police headquarters were at his bedside. One of the officers had a newspaper.
(Schultz noticed newspaper and spoke) - Has it been in any other papers? George, don't make no full moves. What have you done with him? Oh, mama, mama, mama. Oh stop it, stop it; eh, oh, oh. Sure, sure, mama.
Now listen, Phil, fun is fun. Ah please, papa. What happened to the sixteen? Oh, oh, he done it, please. John, please, oh, did you buy the hotel? You promised a million sure. Get out. I wished I knew.
Please make it quick, fast and furious. Please. Fast and furious. Please help me get out; I am getting my wind back, thank God. Please, please, oh please. You will have to please tell him, you got no case.
You get ahead with the dot dash system didn't I speak that time last night. Whose number is that in your pocket book, Phi1 13780. Who was it? Oh- please, please. Reserve decision. Police, police, Henry and Frankie. Oh, oh, dog biscuits and when he is happy he doesn't get happy please, please to do this. Then Henry, Henry, Frankie you didn't even meet me. The glove will fit what I say oh, Kayiyi, oh Kayiyi. Sure who cares when you are through? How do you know this? How do you know this? Well, then oh, Cocoa know thinks he is a grandpa again. He is jumping around. No Hobo and Poboe I think he means the same thing."

Yeah, I saw that Civil War series by Ken Burns as well. I'm from Tennessee and one of the primary historians used by Burns was Shelby Foote. Notorious drunk, but loved his subject. |
