I'm heading back to Japan in December 2010, where apart from working, I want to study Japanese - particularly reading and writing, but I also need to work on my spoken hyoujungo (I really need to work on honorific forms - I try, but I often slip in to my wife's Hakata-ben without realising it).
Can anyone recommend a good school? Preferably from direct experience or personal recommendations? |

My first goal is to get the JLPT level 2 cert.
ARC don't have any schools in Fukuoka-ken :/ |

I am going to be in Shunan shi in Yamaguchi ken and I have been searching the internet for schools in the area. I may just have to wait and ask when I am getting the tour of my new area at the end of the month. If I cannot find anything, I have some JLPT 1 and 2 books that I bought when I was in Japan last year from kinokuniya bookstore. Those will be helpful at least for self study if I cannot find a Japanese lang school near by. |

When you register for your ARC at the local yakusho you can ask (mine gave me a leaflet in English, Portugese, Chinese and Japanese as soon as I reached the ARC desk) about lessons. There are often community lessons on offer for foreigners avaliable for minimal costs (our were 2500 for 30 odd weekly lessons and had 3 class levels - beginner, JLPT 3 and JLPT 2). They may not be the best classes since many are taught by volunteer house wives, but it's a small price to pay and will at least be something until you can find a proper school/tutor. And if you have passable Japanese you can even sign up for culture classes; kimono wrapping, tea ceremony, basket weaving, etc. |

Ok, you're right. There is a big school down there, though, I've seen it online... *quick Google*... I think it's GenkiJACS (linked from the Stanford website)... can't vouch for it personally, mind.
