jamesmollo,

At the time , I had NO alternatives. I had nowhere to go, and didn't have a chance for an interview anywhere (though a nearby university was interested in speaking to me, but the dean wouldn't be back on campus until after my RP ran out). Never having been through this myself, I had only the advice of a Chinese student who was advising me and translating through the PSB. The student was told that the FAO couldn't cancel my permit. I went to the PSB with the FAO to see what would happen. She paid off a clerk during lunch time.

Now that I know all this, there's a Plan B in my itinerary.

It's good that you and other experienced folks are around to tell it like it is.

What if I go to another province on my current shanghai RP.

Can I register at the police without any problems?

Thanks

I would contact an agency as they can often help in extending visas including RPs. The cost is likely to go up as Shanghai Expo is drawing near.

Yes you can register. If anyone asks, which they won't, you are on holiday. Hotels that can accept laowais as guests have a legal duty to register that guest with the local PSB, so you don't need to do anything if you are staying in one.

Hopefully you'll be deported and fine 500 RMB per day - since you are in the country illegally now.

I just called the PSB about this very thing yesterday (bear in mind that I'm in a different province, so the rules may be different here).

In my case, it's me who's cancelling the contract -- or in the process -- but I called the PSB to see what the process was.

First, they encouraged me in my actions (they were related to the school's failure to address pertinent security issues -- I was the 3rd foreign teacher to be attacked in broad daylight in the perimeter of the school), and they recommended moving to another school. They said that when I left my current school, the Resident Permit/Visa would be voided, and then they would issue me a 30 day tourist visa.

Of course, for the Residence Permit to be voided, the school has to report that I have left employment. I have heard that it involves someone from the school to come down to the PSB office, and fill out a lot of paperwork, and that most schools don't bother to do this -- it's too much trouble. Although it sounds like they may have done that to you.
