An oil worker was killed in Yanbu a few years ago. He was dragged thru the streets behind a Toyota Hilux and then paraded in front of a school full of young children. Real friendly people, apparently.

I talked to a recruiter about working at one of the universities or colleges in Yanbu not too long ago. They were called iesh canada. They wanted to interview me in Montreal. I asked them if they would pay for my travel costs up there and they said no. Here's the info they sent me: "the salary range is 9K - 14K SR net + health + housing + weekly transport fees (gas) + one year round trip ticket. the vacation is 2 times half month within the year plus 2 months paid summer vacation."

I can't imagine working in the middle of nowhere with absolutely nothing to do and risking my life for 9000 SR a month. But hey, it's your life.

I did a lot of running in Yanbu at night. That was my social life.

The story about the oil worker made me shudder. However, I didn't encounter any problems. That's not to say that the threat level is nonexistent. At the same time, going to Yanbu does not mean you will be attacked.

Of course, the word "still" used as an adverb here might more appropriately be used as a noun there.

Many jokes amongst students about the sexual proclivities of Yanbu-ites. Will Yanbu be the first town in KSA to legalise same-gender marriages ?
