So what's it like? The good and the bad would be greatly appreciated!

I'm on a salary of 7.5mn, I'm good at budgeting and saving, but not too sure how much the rent would cost me? I'd rather not live on my own.

Each to their own but I prefer Jakarta to Bogor. I can't help but feel you will work in Bogor but travel up the road every weekend as there is little to do except visit the Botanical Gardens. Entertainment seems non existent. One thing that shocked me was although Bogor is a much smaller city, the traffic in the inner city was as bad as anything I encountered in Jakarta.

I've lived in Bogor for two years and that hasn't been my experience. Sounds like magpie has only ever visited the place at the weekend and not looked beyond the (heavily congested) inner traffic system.

Bogor has two upscale gyms, two 21 cinemas that are well run (and a couple more that aren't!), and if you are a drinker there are a few bars and cafes frequented by bules. There is a lack of fine dining though plenty of places that are half-decent to have a bite to eat. The largest mall, Botani Square, has all the usual Starbucks/J Co/Pizza Hut junk food outlets plus a few decent shops. If you have your own transport and can get out weekdays - NOT at weekends when the whole area is gridlocked by B registered cars - you don't have to go far to find scenery.

My only caveat would be that on Rp7.5 mill you won't be very comfortable. Housing is going to cost you at least 1 mill per month (and you don't get much for that), while everything else costs exactly the same as in Jakarta. I am frankly astonished that anyone in Bogor is paying so little. Could you hint at the name of the school?

Thanks for your replies! I'm not a huge spender so I'm not too worried moneywise, I'll be working for EF Swara.

Can anyone tell me the general price of laptops over there? Glad to hear about the gym too!

I'm very excited, slightly worried and a teeeeenshy bit nervous! It's my first TEFL job Smile

Lived in Bogor for some years. Agree (mostly) with Malu. I love Bogor, and most people I know prefer it to Jakarta. Anything specific I can help you with, let me know.
When do you arrive in Bogor?

It'll be around July 23rd, they'll pay for my first month accommodation and help me find somewhere else within that month. Sounds pretty reasonable to me!

I'm really looking forward to being somewhere new, Ireland is just too small for me Very Happy

Is there a general dress code in public? I know it's not as strict as other places, but this would still be good to know.

Would I be able to find a good health food shop for vitamins and the likes?

Which is the best bank to set up an account with?

Am I better off food shopping at a Sunday Market or in a Supermarket?

Have sent you a PM, with some responses to your last post.
Rest assured that most of the things you can buy in your home country are available here. The majority of the population are Muslim, so it's polite to appear in public in not-too-revealing clothes. If you want to read up on this fascinating, complex, challenging (and sometimes frustrating) country, a good place to start could be "Culture Shock! Indonesia". I found it a very valuable book during my first few years here.
Good luck. Hope you find this forum useful.

I'm also having some trouble finding a place to live. Are there any websites which show rooms/apartments to rent?

The Hash House Harriers usually ran around Sirkuit Sentul when I was there. Great group from all over Jakarta/Bogor.
