I am studying Chinese in Shanghai, and I have been here a week so far. I paid for 3 months, but I may consider leaving earlier or later if I find a school to work at.

What is the normal procedure? In Korea, recruiters often get schools. I haven't had any major problems with this system, so if anyone knows of recruiters please let me know.

Shanghai is too big of a city for me, and I knew it coming in. However, I would prefer working further out. I am in the heart of Shanghai, near People's Square. So, maybe just further from the center would suffice. It doesn't really matter to me if I am not in a major city or not.

I am looking for a full-time job with middle school age and up, while being allowed to do privates. Second choice would be 4th grade and up, also being allowed to do privates.

What are the recommended steps in China?

Also, is it common for apartments not to come with a washer at least (if not a washer and dryer)? I found out the dorm I am staying at only has like one washer, so I have resorted to doing it by hand in a plastic bowl. Definitely a new experience here in China. I am adjusting though.

It would be assumed that you should have a student visa.

Therefore, you are not entitled to work.

Or, you came on a tourist/visitor visa.

Also, you are not entitled to work.

Assume I am not dumb and I know this.
Assume I came here to teach.
Assume I will change my visa appropriately.
Assume my original post is sincere and I am looking for a school to work at under the right visa requirements.

Anyone? Cool

On campus foreign students' apartments don't usually include a washing machine but on campus foreign teachers' apartments do. None of the 5 on campus FT's apartments I have lived in included a clothes dryer.

Suzhou is a very nice city which is 30 minutes from Shanghai by (the frequent) high-speed train.

Wuxi is a nice city which is 1 hour from Shanghai by (the frequent) high-speed train.

I've never seen a clothes dryer in China. I've been told they exist.

Check your local San Lian or other large electronics/appliance shop. Combination washer/dryer units are available where I am, but the cost is around 12,000+ RMB ... quite an impressive number.
