Hello y'all,

I searched your forum before posting this and couldn't find something on-point, so here goes.

I am an American. My wife is Taiwanese who is getting her green card in America via our marriage. Following her receiving her green card, we would like teach in China as part of the same program (my understanding is that jointly, we will have more than we would separately).

My wife is not a native English speaker but she worked as a high school teacher in Taiwan. She has an undergrad degree in teaching English--a BED degree in ESL.

Anyone tell us our chances of being able to work together? My wife seems to think they only want white-skinned people for these types of jobs. I think her experience and degree might warrant them giving us a chance. Any chance? And if so, any particular programs that might be open to us?

Thank you very much. Love the forum.

Welcome to the Cafe.

I have known a couple other teachers in similar positions to yours. You can search around and start applying for jobs. You and your wife will not have a problem finding employment. Undoubtedly you will not have a problem finding a job, it might be a little more difficult for your wife. But if her English is good she will have no problem either.

Some schools might be less willing to pay her the same as a foreign teacher since she is Chinese, but many schools are glad to get two for the price of one.

I would recommend that you get a job and your wife teaches private lessons. She can make more money this way. But if you both want to teach at the same school that is also doable. I knew a husband and wife from Hong Kong who taught at a uni in the Jiangsu province. They were in the mainland after living and working in Canada.

Just start shopping around. The idea of a two-for-one deal is very appealing to many schools. Chinese hire all types of people to teach English; Africans, Indians, Philippinos and at my school we even have a Frenchman teaching English.

Good luck, stop worrying and start your job search.

Just noticed that she is trying to immigrate to the good ol' USA. This may get complicated for you if you leave the US for a long-term job assignment together. Also, if you are marketing yourselves in China, your wife must market herself as Chinese, not Taiwanese.

Most important, check the rules on leaving the homeland during the immigration and naturalization process. You may be better waiting until your wife has the same blue passport.

Good luck!
