Dear CanItBILuvASaudi,
" . . . are you sure some of you are not just trying to scare off ppl.."
I'm certainly not trying to scare anyone off - for my own selfish reasons. That's because my days in Saudi are all behind me. I'm a geezer now, and, at 67, I would have no hope of going back to the Kingdom.
Moreover, I don't want to go back. I put in nineteen years there, and while I was very fortunate (with the MA and years of teaching experience) to get a job I liked (at the IPA in Jeddah and in Riyadh,) I'm quite happy here in Santa Fe.
What I (and many other posters) ARE trying to do is to let you know what you can expect there given your qualifications/experience.
It may not seem fair at all - your having an MA (in an unrelated field) and a certificate (you never have said, I think, if it was obtained online, but if it was, it's just about useless in the Kingdom) - but that's the way it really is there.
Oh, you almost certainly WILL be able to get "A" job, but the odds are extremely high that it will be one that you will NOT find at all congenial.
All the best, though. I really do hope you luck out.
Regards,
John |

| I guess Im not buying the notion that one cannot find A job with a diff MA + certificate...maybe not the salary *you* would consider a "job" but maybe one I'd be grateful for......are you sure some of you are not just trying to scare off ppl.....wouldnt be surprised.....lol.... |
You see.... you're doing it again! Coming on here ostensibly seeking advice but pouring scorn on anyone and everyone who tells it like it is.
As John says, the people with relevant MAs and experience won't feel in the least threatened by you, and would have no reason to want to 'scare you off' so let's get that out of the way for starters.
Now, as for your qualifications. As others have said, your MA in Middle East studies is of no relevance, any more than my MA in Applied Linguistics would be relevant if I were looking for a job teaching, say, Middle East history. I've never seen any jobs which request teachers to have an MA in an unspecified subject. Could you give examples?
While most universities understandably prefer academic qualifications, many will accept teachers with a CELTA or equivalent. They will not - unless they are truly desperate (and that's a warning in itself) take someone with an online 'certificate'.
In other words, the reality is that unless you take steps to upgrade your credentials, you are looking at bottom of the barrell jobs at best. You can stamp your feet and get angry at us for pointing this out all you like, but that's how it is.
As I've said before: Don't shoot the messenger. |
