Dear zooey,

"However, to hear Americans discussing aspirated and unaspirated H's makes me wonder about the very qualifications of those who talk about erbs and erbal tea. (so amusing to us Brits) Have they perchance been influenced by the patios of Jamaican immigrants to the Land of the Free?"

It would seem that I and every American I have ever heard say the words "herbs" and "herbal tea" have somehow escaped the insidious influence of those patios-speaking, h-dropping Jamaicans.
But then, we don't get too many of them here in New Mexico, Very Happy

Regards,
John

Interestingly, my experience has been exactly the opposite. I suspect that it is geographical in the US. East Coast... far north... there is usually no "h" in herb or herbal... and to me it sounds odd to hear it pronounced.

Rather like that "t" in often... Laughing

Dear veiledsentiments,

Lord, I HATE hearing that "t" in "often", not to mention hearing the "b" in "subtle."

Regards,
John

Where I grew up, there is a "t" ... moved to the East Coast and it disappeared. It could bring up some spirited discussions in a US linguistics class. I have heard it pronounced with the 't' on the BBC too.

That one doesn't bother me... what bothers me is when the Brits (and New Englanders) stick "r" all over the ends of words that don't have one... but then don't pronounce the ones that are written. Rolling Eyes

The vile practice of which you speak is a feature not of Britspeak but of varieties that we used to call RP.

"Lor and order," is certainly not found in all varieties spoken on our Offshore Islands. Certainly not amongst those who speak as I do !

You will note that I didn't say all Brits... but you must admit that it's common in that part of the world. I naturally wasn't including you as a 'Brit'... you're a Scot!! Cool
