| In looking for some information for my wife I came across this post and read to the end, but was still unclear. Is the dress code for women different on and around faculty housing at KFUPM than out in town? |

| There are a fair number of "pious ones" at KFUPM - many from Pakistan and the Middle East. Immodest dress, which may mean something different to them than it does to you, may attract unwanted criticism. |

An oversized "hoodie" jacket over a tee shirt and long jeans would probably be quite acceptable to everyone in the area, but I am just speculating because I have not been there.
Even inside most compounds, women will find themselves criticized for wearing shorts (except for long capri-style ones), sleevless shirts, and anything tight or low-cut. Baggy and well-covered is generally acceptable to everyone. |

And that's a shame. On our compound in tiny Tabuk, a woman had to assert her right to wear a bikini any time she liked. But she did. It was no big deal after a while.
The compounds were created to avoid culture clashes. Westerners are segregated for the simplicity. Having the segregation conditional (outside alcohol(retail) and drugs) is ridiculous. When citizens of Jordan or Syria are allowed to live on our compound, it's usually so they can save money and they must acclimate themselves to the western weirdos, not the other way around.
It's too bad what Mia describes might be the status quo of larger compounds. |

Yes. What do we think we have compound swimming pools for--men only? Or women tolerated as long as they wear their abayas in the water? $#%@ that.
Besides, I was on a corporate compound in Riyadh for a couple of weeks last year and I chatted with Arab women in bikinis at the pool. |

"Most compounds" where?
On my compound in Jeddah, Lebanese women wear the tartiest of clothes, way tartier than the Western women. And such is the case with most compounds in Jeddah.
I guess you meant to say "most university compounds". In that case, you are probably right. |

Oh, the Lebanese are an exception everywhere...didn't you know that? 
I think that many compounds have conflicts about what is acceptable for women to wear. It was an endless cause of friction on the compound where I lived. I personally just tended to take the middle of the road, but many others felt strongly that they should be able to cover as little as they wanted.
I have heard that even on the Aramco compound, shorts are required to be knee-length. Does anyone know if this is true? |

If it is a compound of a Saudi company or university, expect the unstated rules to be different. I don't live on a compound for employees of a certain company. It is just a residential compound, where anybody can live, working anywhere, and from any country.
So yes, since we are mostly talking about university compounds here, then yes, the rules will be different, even if they aren't written in stone. |
