Hey guys,

I recently just recieved my TESOL certificate and am hoping to teach in South America, specifically Uruguay. I have taken the liberty to send my CV out to a few schools I was able to discover on the internet. This approach may work eventually but its not landing me much so far.

I was thinking of just taking off to Uruguay but I had a few questions. Would I just travel there on a tourist Visa (one way ticket too?)? How much money would be ideal to have after a plane ticket to live while looking for a job (I've never landed in a country without a job)? I guess I'm asking if anybody has done the Uruguay thing and knows the cost of living and whether or not I can land a job there easy. I also don't have a degree but as far as I know they don't require one in Uruguay.

Any insight would be much appreciated ! Thank you

Just wondering if someone PM'd you some answers, or if you mind posting what you have found out so far.

Thanks for your time.

For Latin America, in GENERAL; it's pretty easy to border hop. For Uruguay, look here

Thanks a lot for the replies.

For the most part all of my questions are answered as my trip to Uruguay is set for early May. I suppose anything I don't know I'll be figuring out pretty soon Wink

Wish me luck, and best of luck to all in their search!

Are there any recommended hot seasons for finding teaching jobs in Uruguay?

Yeah, a further update would be fantastic! Any news?

I lived in Uruguay for a year and I really want to go back to teach there now, after passing my Trinity TESOL.

The cost of living to the wage isn't particularly fantastic, but it depends how you want to live out there!
In my experience, it's pretty much in one hand and out the other if you want to live alone; however, someone else on the forum has mentioned that they found a flat share in the classificados, which sounds like a much better option if you can find it...
Feb is the best time to job hunt for teaching as school starts in March, also border hopping is definitely advisable in the meantime. It is possible to extend your 90 day visa for another 90 days, but you can only do it once and then pay an exit fee :S

Anyway, if anyone wants to know anything about Uruguay, feel free to PM me! I came back in August last year after living there for 1 year (been there previously in 2006 also) and began the process for Residency, which is pretty long and frustrating Wink
