I have several friends and colleagues still teaching at HTC, and they earn something in the region of 24-25k per month. Mind you, they've been there for donkey's years.
It's a very good salary, as it's equal to about 4,000 sterling per month, or around 50k sterling per year. To earn that in the UK, you'd need to be earning something like 65-70k per year before tax - and no teacher gets that, I'm sure! |

| Sounds about right if your income taxes in the UK aren't over 30% for a 50K salary. 50K sterling is $75,000 US. Add the income tax and social security deductions for that amount and you're looking at 25-30%...$22,000. Then add the value of free housing, $1000 a month, $12K annually. Total value of tax-free package with free housing = $34,000. That should be about 22,000 pounds sterling. Added to 50K = 72K total package. And all that's assuming your income taxes are as low as they are in the US...which I assume they are not. |

| I guess you're right, SNB. Renting out the homeland property can be very lucrative, and I know of one teaching couple at HTC who each earn at least 25k a month, with another 2,000 quid per month on top from their UK rental income (two properties). That makes for a very generous annual income of around 125k sterling ($200k ?) for the two of them - not bad, eh! |

A PhD coming has no value until is officially arrives. For the most part, it will be very similar to the salaries offered to TEFL MAs with the same amount of experience as you (which you didn't mention and that would have a great deal of effect). You may get a bit more if it is something highly technical with not too many people teaching it...

| They work you very hard. Next year when they turn into a degree granting outfit things will probably get much worse. Avoid Sharjah Women's - quite a few nasties out here. The big boss has no idea how to treat people. Busy writing emails at 3 in the morning!!!! |

One thing to bear in mind is that the education allowance paid by HCT has not changed since the 1990s. This is causing REAL problems for many teachers, as it means that they end up paying as much as 40,000 dirhams (more than 10,000 bucks) per year just to keep their kids in school. For some teachers, this represents a large slice of money - around 15 - 20% of their pay.
This is the usual case of hypocrisy by the management, who insist on their faculty being 'flexible' at work, but fail to even consider revising the outdated education allowance. The figure of 40k per child was fine 15 years ago, but 60k per year will soon be the norm for most good schools in Dubai and AD.
Best look elsewhere for a better deal on this. I hear that ZU pay a better schooling allowance. |

Hi all.
My basic qualifications:
MA TESoL 2008
Teaching License in English Lang. Arts
BA Communications
10 years teaching exp. 1 yr. tertiary
I'm trying to get hired now in the UAE. I just applied at HCT through their website (English Faculty and Eng Cert) and I'm seeing a lot of different numbers thrown around here.
If I am hoping to be offered around 18000AED (this would make me very happy)...is this likely with my qualifications? If not, can I ask for more or do I need to accept whatever I am offered or walk away?
Any one know of any other schools that are still hiring that I should check out?

Hi Madhouse... good to see you.
Is your MA from Alexandria University? I worry that it *may* not be recognized by the Gulf Ministries. Have you checked that question? (not sure where you have been teaching since Alex...)
I might also apply to ZU.
Some places only count experience after the MA, so you may not make it to 18000. The better the employer (a theoretical measure ) the less likely that they are to negotiate. I have read rumors here that people have managed to get a bump from places like HCT, but I have no direct evidence, nor do I know what they had to offer that would be special.
If you would be interested in the schools, you might look at Teachaway's website. They are always advertising here. But, it is mostly lower elementary at the moment (though I have seen ads for 12th grade). They require a teaching cert/license from home country.

Better re-check your sources, BS. MY sources report that the HCT provides up to AED 60,000 per child now and has over the past few years... But, as it was pointed out in a meeting..."How come the HCT pays for annual airfare for three kids, but the schooling just for two?"

No my MA is not from Alex U. It is from Cambridge College in Massachusetts. I am currently on a teaching fellowship with the State Department at Alex U.
I have almost zero experience with lower elementary. I mostly teach high schhol.
I'm unfamiliar with "ZU." What university is that? |
Oh yeah... I remember now. Tough keeping all of you straight sometimes. That takes care of that possible issue.
ZU is Zayed University, which is a women's university with a branch in Abu Dhabi and a branch in Dubai. Check out the website. You may also want to check out American University in Sharjah.

Interviewing has been going on for a couple months now and offers are going out. Certainly that is true for the EFL area.
If you don't hear soon, you could send them an email... or it just may be that they no longer need anyone in your content area.

Hi Dido.
You (and other folks applying for HCT) should know the following.
On Wednesday I went in and talked to my colleges director. I was trying to see if there was any way to get a friend of mine through the prehiring stuff and into an interview for a position at HCT. I love the nepotism which is rather rampant in most branches of HCT.
My director showed me on the portal the number of current vacancies which are advertised (his view said 24 current positions, for which there may be multiple openings for each position.). At the same time he showed me the number of applicants for those 24 positions. The number was in excess of 1600 applicants.
He then showed me the CV of one of the people applying for a chairs position at our school. This individual had a very impressive CV. They weren't even interviewed.
So understand that at the moment, there is a very large pool of very qualified applicants for a small number of positions.
I would suggest that you contact HR and ask about the status of your applicaiton.
BTW. HCT is already interviewing. They interviewed at the TESOL conference in Boston, and at TESOL Arabia. |

Eisenhorn, your post might explain my situation with HCT.
Passed screening in Feb, got a call to set up an interview. Time and date were tentatively set, then the interview got postponed a few times. Now it seems to be postponed indefinitely. Maybe they just got loads of qualified folks at the TESOL conferences.
Actually I've applied to over a dozen places in UAE (and Qatar and Oman), but HCT was the the best result I've gotten. Mostly no replies. I've got an MA in linguistics from a good school, 4 years at uni post-MA, and an IELTS examiner certification, so a little disappointed. There's always next school year.
