Hi all
I'm looking at taking a position at Best International School in Zhengzhou. Can anyone tell me more about the school or living in Zhengzhou? |

Google "Best International School in Zhengzhou", lots of stuff. I'm in Zhongmu City, a suburb of Zhengzhou. When I first came to China I lived in Zhengzhou for about a month. Lots of shops, lots of western places (McDonald's, Haagen Daas, Pizza Hut, etc.), relatively expensive compared to some of the more rural areas, but still cheap by US standards. |

thanks for the info. There's not that much about Zhengzhou on the web so it's good to hear that if nothing else i can splurge on fast food |

Yeah, well if you intend to splurge on "fast food" (and American chains across much of China don't do anything fast), bring LOTS of money. Haagen Daas is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive as are the pizza places (ZZ has Papa Johns and Pizza *beep*) and DQ.
While ZZ is not an industrial city, it is still grubby and ugly. Buildings are thrown up any which way and a significant number of major streets seem to be permanently dug up. I saw some local in a Boxster the other day and wondered how much he must have regretted that purchase because the roads are terrible and only 136 people here know what Porsches are, and they all drive Cayennes.
Having said all that, decent stuff is easy to get and some dishes from the local cuisine are OK. There are a couple of OK bars, one or two decent hotels that serve passable western meals and the weather is OK. |

ZZ is not an industrial city - are you serious?
Zhengzhou is the Chinese heartland for the mining machinery industry. |

I spent three days on vacation in Zhengzhou last January. My impressions:
-- a cool-looking twin pagoda, the February 7 Pagoda, marks the center of city
-- a gritty, industrial city
-- pretty bad air pollution
-- not one, but TWO DQ's! (American ice cream/fast food chain restaurant)
-- a relatively easy-to-use bus system
-- a couple of hours by bus from the Longmen Grottoes and Song Mtn./Shaolin Temple
-- less than an hour from the Yellow River
-- bad traffic jams in the city center (near the train station) because they're building a subway system
-- a fair amount of Muslim restaurants, for a nice change from the usual Chinese food
-- upon arrival, I got ripped off by a taxi driver, on the ride from the train station to my hotel
-- the remains of the old city wall, which look not unlike a long dirt mound
-- pretty inexpensive in general |
