Hi there,

I’m currently teaching English at a university in Wuhan and finding it difficult to decide on my next place of residence. There are sooo many cities in China with loads to offer depending on one’s desires. So after enough time spent researching I’ve narrowed my choices to Chengdu and Nanjing. What I like about Wuhan is that it’s a big city, lots of universities, people are generally honest, lots to do, central for travelling, decent nightlife and still very Chinese!

Now I’d love to hear from anyone who has an opinion or can offer some advice on this topic.

Thanks……

I suggest a different option:
Nanwucheng!
It's got the Yangzi, plenty of double-decker bridges spanning it, lots of teahouses and plenty of universities. Not to mention the furnace-quality summers.

The best jobs come from recommendations by foreign teachers already at the school. You could do a lot worse than check this one out

Hey thanks for the advice so far...

I'm also keen to hear from teachers that also live (or have done so) in either of these two cities. Do you like living in Nanjing or Chengdu??

Roger - Nanwucheng is a nice city but I prefer Jinghandu! Its got everything you mentioned plus the locals are a lot more friendly.

I go to Nanjing regularly for cheese trips and to catch up with the local FTs. Nanjing has all the Western food goods, products you need. It has good bars, shopping etc... The people there tend not to stare due to the large number of foreign uni students, foreign teachers and expats, so you can walk down the street at ease. There are also many cultural places to visit (it used to be the capital of China!). The train takes about 2 1/2 hrs to Shanghai. Umm what else.

Nanjing has a mix of both Chinese and Western worlds, but I think it has more of a Western feel to it.

Chengdu is pretty good, it has a really laid-back atmosphere. Local people seem to pride themselves on being able to take it easy. There's a lot to see in Sichuan, and you're close to Yunnan, so even though the city doesn't have a whole lot going on, you can easily get away to some nice places when you can spare a week.
It's clean and relatively easy to get around in, rents are reasonable and there's a pretty friendly ex-pat community. Jobs are reasonably plentiful, if not the highest paying.
Why not fly in for a visit during the May break?

Im going to a city 90 minutes outside Chengdu so imagine I will spend a lot of time there at weekends and holidays. Originally I wanted Nanjing too but the scenery and things to do near Chengdu (Yunnan, Leshan, Emei Shan, even Tibet) made my mind up. Hope you end up heading to Sichuan sometime too mate, and we can go for a beer Smile
